The importance of visuals in behaviour change communication intentions. In such a digital and technological world that we are in today, everything has become very visual-oriented especially as a result of new and multimedia. As a result, people are now more drawn to visual graphics, which makes it a very important concept in today's world. Communications can be used to effect behaviour change. Therefore this seeks to unfold the basis or rationale for visuals in the sphere of communication. The purpose of this research is to examine the significance or effectiveness of visual images in photojournalism. This study wiill help to create awareness on its importance as a tool or an agent of change using both personal research and references from other works.

In such a digital and technological world that we are in today, everything has become very visual-oriented especially as a result of new and multimedia. As a result, people are now more drawn to visual graphics, which makes it a very important concept in today's world. Communications can be used to effect behaviour change. The purpose of this research is to examine the significance or effectiveness of visual images in photojournalism. This study wiill help to create awareness on its importance as a tool or an agent of change using both personal research and references from other works. Keywords: visual, behaviour, significance. INTRODUCTION Behavior change communication (BCC) is the strategic use of communication to promote positive outcomes and positively influence people's knowledge, attitudes, and practices based on proven theories and models of behavior change. It is one aimed at identifying a particular problem and providing solutions to them using visuals. In this said process of communication, this study intends to answer the posed question of why visuals should be incorporated; why it is important. It plays a key role in assuaging unfavourable or negative behaviours and practices in the society at large, thereby promoting better social conditions. In this study, researches and theories are made use of as a veritable instance to explain the role of visual communication in behaviour change. DISCUSSION For reference purposes, there is need to take note of what the word 'visual' means and what constitutes visuals. Visual means anything relating to seeing or sight. It includes not just graphics but also videos and photos. Types of visual media include digital and printed images, photography, graphic design, videos, animation, and more. Visual media is regularly viewed on billboards, smartphones, newspapers, screen projectors, posters, televisions, computers, and various other mediums and devices. Photography and video are the primary visual media types and capture a location, moment, memory, or message in a visual form. Visuals are often used as a learning and teaching aid, such as in presentations and training guides. A very important visual means of communication is the television. The mass media of communication such as television have been regarded as important tools for teaching and learning. It is for this reason that we have concepts like educational broadcast; the use of broadcast signals for learning purposes; edutainment; media contents that educate as well as entertainment. One of the channels of mass communication that has the potential to serve as a learning tool is television. In addition to visuals as learning and teaching aid, the social cognitive theory comes in.. Albert Bandura propounded the theory in 1989 to explain how the learning process takes place. According to the theory, people best learn by observing others carry out certain actions, which is visual in nature. The researchers in a cited study adopted the four elements of learning process in a graphical manner. According to the element presented, people need to first grant attention to new ideas. Even if a model is illustrating but people do not give attention, it will be difficult, if not impossible, for them to learn anything. A point worthy to be considered here on the significance of visuals is that it is easy to get attention through visuals because they are harder for people to ignore. Studies show that humans are naturally attracted to visuals. So therefore, visuals remain an effective tool for mental retention especially when strategically created for its distinct purpose. It is also a good tool on improving or enhancing concentration. An example of strategic communication in respect to visuals for behaviour change is depicted using the issue of reckless driving. It can be said that there is a level of awareness of its dangers. If at all any communication step is to be taken concerning this issue, it may lose major effect without the incorporation of visuals as constant reminder. Little wonder visuals are carefully put out at tactical points on the roads. To butress this point, it is proven scientifically that our brains tend to retain more information in the form of a visual as compared to information that is just in simple text. Pictures enter through sensory memory and are further enrolled in the eyes and grabbed as visual images in a visual sensory memory for a short time span. This strengthens the memory's connection to the information. So therefore the viewers can quickly and better process information. This makes it easier to drive action, which can gradually lead to gradual behaviour change. The importance of visuals are further pressed on, given this cited research by Gilakjani. Gilakjani (2012) tested the effectiveness of visual multimedia in the understanding of English Language classes. The study was conducted in Iran involving 100 Iranians. The researcher made use of descriptive survey research design and collected data through the use of a structured questionnaire. The result of the study revealed that up to 55% of the sample express preference for visual multimedia in their learning. The implication from the study of Gilakjani (2012) is that even learners prefer visual multimedia as a learning strategy. Still on this point, another study shows that content with compelling images can generate 94 percent more views on average than content without images. This reinforces not just its importance but its preference. The importance of incorporating visuals with other media is expressed in the cognitive theory of multimedia learning. According to Clark and Mayer (2003), the theory can be broken down into principles. Some of these principles are: (a) it is better to make use of a combination of words and graphics than only using words. This is called the multimedia principle; (b) it is better to ensure that words are properly aligned with corresponding images than the other way round. This is called the contiguity principle. According to this, one can begin to see that any form of communication without effective use of visuals is at risk of not being very effective, as compared to the addition of visuals. Taking all these into account, Mayer notes that visual multimedia is an effective tool for promoting learning and changing behavior (Mayer, 2014). He notes further that visual multimedia should be considered as part of an overall strategy to educate people and infuence their behaviour.
