In two of her works, Mateiu I. Caragiale – Initiation and Aestheticism (2005) and Under the Sign of the Baroque (2009), Dana Nicoleta Popescu has synthesized the thematic similarities between Mateiu’s Gallants of the Old Court and Lampedusa’s The Cheetah, investigating the baroque motifs throughout these works. Beyond the stream of motifs on which Dana Nicoleta Popescu makes subtle commentaries, a baroque of nature can be identified, represented by the twilight moment, bright and exuberant, but marked by an awareness of transience, of dimming light and death, specific to the baroque. The presence of the twilight is associated, in Mateiu’s creative space, with a veritable chromatic explosion, meant to convey the astounding colour palette of the sun through a series of ample, richly decorated images, in which an abundance of roses and crimson nuances is joined by an abundance of blood and fire. Splendidly coloured, but with a nostalgic tint, the twilight is converted in Mateiu Caragiale and Lampedusa into an expressive metaphor of the aristocratic twilight, awakening in the imagination of the reader the iconic image of a past filled with glamour and noble majesty. Keywords: twilight; baroque of nature; splendour; melancholy; twilight of nobility.

During the Spring of Nations in the lands of the Crown of St. Stefan (1848-1849) traditional ties of friendship, with the possibility of a military confrontation occurring with one, two invaders attracted a large crowd of Polish volunteers for the formation of the Hungarian honveds. About 4,000 Poles were fighting directly in the ranks of the revolutionary army, and enrolled to the national legions under the command of Generals Joseph Wysocki alongside the Transylvanian Army Fieldmarshal Joseph Bem. Among them, about 20 individuals who will be later on commanders of the guerrilla armed troops of the January Uprising (1863-1864). For this reason, it is worth recalling the experience that the military group acquired during the battles for the Hungarian Plain, Slovakia, Bukovina, Moldavia, Banat, Backa and Transylvania.

The city of Bălți, during the years 1918–1939, had the opportunity to know a vast development in several spheres, becoming a regional economic center, which contributed to bringing it to light in the national arena, often competing with the regions over the Prut River. This study refers to the First guide of the municipality of Bălți edited by Iosif Broitman, published in 1938. The content of the article reflects the sectors of activity in the interwar period of the Balti municipality, especially the years 1937–1938: education, medicine, economy, culture, enterprises, factories. At the same time, the services offered in the municipality and the persons responsible in these fields are highlighted. The author points out the actions taken by the local administration for the socio-economic rise of the municipality, but also the weak points of the activity to which the attention of municipal structures should be drawn.

Mircea Eliade’s Interwar American Project: In his first year spent in India, 1929, Mircea Eliade nurtured two projects related to America, which remained unaccomplished. On the one hand, he was planning a long return trip to his homeland, which would pass through the United States. On the other hand, he considered obtaining a teaching position in an American university, the first target being Harvard. This early American project – hitherto unexplored – becomes symbolic in the perspective of Eliade’s subsequent evolution and choices. Decades later, as a professor at the University of Chicago, he turned down an invitation to occupy a chair at Harvard, which offered him far better conditions and opportunities than those in Chicago. We present here the first results of an ongoing research that tries to clarify all the details related to the young Eliade’s American project.

Bells used in Christian churches are documentary sources due to the inscriptions, decorations and coats of arms available on them. Depending on the language in which the inscriptions were made, old bells had different names. The bells used to be donated to the churches by private persons, by the right of the founder, or by communities; the oldest bells of the medieval Moldavian state date back to the reign of Stephen the Great. The alloy used for bell casting contained copper, brass and a minor amount of silver or other elements. Bellfounders were itinerant, traveling from church to church to cast bells, the furnaces were built on sites, and the casting of large bells was carried out only during the warmer months. The most lasting operation was building the furnace and constructing the mold, and the most dangerous process was pouring the melt metal in a mold. This was followed by controlled cooling the bell, removing the mold material after the metal has solidifi ed, and finishing t...

This paper aims at discussing some problems of the contemporary art through some of Arthur Danto’s theories. The concept of the end of art, the new way of making art, how to understand the contemporary art are some fundamental problems of nowadays art criticism. Comparisons among artistic techniques used by various avant-gardist movements, especially cubist, abstractionist and dadaist ones are intended to build a comprehensive image of the evolution in art creativity towards post-wars period represented by new contributions (Andy Warhol and Joseph Beuys). These examples prove that the contemporary art needs a more attentive interpretation and a better understanding of the material-form connection within the art work and the process of plastic creativity.

THE AROMANIANS IN CONTEMPORARY ROMANIA Romanians are one of the native people from this part of Europe, the only heirs of the eastern Roman Empire. Romanians were born, as showed in historical and linguistic studies, on both sides of the Danube River, an ethnical continuity on both banks of the river, until the Slav people arrived in the 6th and 7th centuries AD. The political situation created after the First World War caused serious problems for the Aromanians in the newly created Balkan states. There were substantial population exchanges among the Balkanic countries (Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria). This situation led to the change of the ethnic composition in these countries There were three main emigration centers: Meglenia, Veria and Vodena. The idea of the Macedo-Romanians' migration to Cadrilater represents a consequence of the demographic pressure put on the Aromanian population living in Greece. The difficulties, which appeared, caused the migration to Cadrilater of an important Aromanian segment (more than 25 000), between 1925 and 1933. But these circumstances did not mean the end of their tragedy because they were displaced to Constanţa and Tulcea when territory in Cadrilater was ceded to Bulgaria (September 1940). In Dobrudja, the Macedo-Romanians are a linguistic and cultural community, but, at the same time, south-Danubian Romanians, due to hostile historical events, were forced to settle here. In their native lands, they were in contact with other Balkan people, being separated from the body of Carpathian and Danubian Romanianhood. Looking after sheep, carrying merchandise and trading were the main issues that shaped the common ethnic and linguistic aspects of survival on both sides of the Danube River. The paper is focused upon the situation and specific problems of the Aromanians living in contemporary Romania.

In the history of Romanian literature in Bessarabia Creangă's modelling role is exem¬pli¬fied especially during the turning periods, when the concept of literature is radicalized (years 20-30, 60, 80). Across different searches and wanderings of prose writers, namely, the organicist perspective of the structure of the Bessarabian literary phenomenon elucidates the importance of the Creangă model in overcoming the different complexes, among which, especially, of the narrow-minded Romanian.

Having a long tradition among the Romanian mass-media, the childrenřs magazines had an important role in educating and shaping the readersř character, believes and behavior. The influence of the press was due to the high confidence with which those magazines were credited. Children's magazines have followed the general trend of the press, representing a reflection of the national policies. If until August 1944, the magazines dedicated to children had mostly an educational and entertaining role, after this date they were used as a manipulation and propaganda tool. From this point of view, an interesting period is that of the early years of communism, when we can notice the coexistence of the two roles Ŕ educational and political. The aim of our study is to describe the evolution of Jurnalul copiilor (The Childrenřs Journal), to highlight its particularities, and to reveal the most important topics.
