Abstract In this photo essay, Glenton (Liberty) Matthyse reflects on the experiences of winning the Miss Gay Western Cape Pageant in 2014 and explains the cultural contexts of the pageant, hir preparation as a participant, the vocabulary around forms of gender identification currently employed in the Western Cape, and the humanitarian, gay and trans rights work that have arisen from the pageant.
