Sonic Interaction Design (SID) is an emerging field that is positioned at the intersection of auditory display, ubiquitous computing, interaction design, and interactive arts. SID can be used to describe practice and inquiry into any of various roles that sound may play in the interaction loop between users and artifacts, services, or environments, in applications that range from the critical functionality of an alarm, to the artistic significance of a musical creation. This field is devoted to the privileged role the auditory channel can assume in exploiting the convergence of computing, communication, and interactive technologies. An overemphasis on visual displays has constrained the development of interactive systems that are capable of making more appropriate use of the auditory modality. Today the ubiquity of computing and communication resources allows us to think about sounds in a proactive way. This workshop puts a spotlight on such issues in the context of the emerging domain of SID.

Nowadays, human-object and human-human interactions are often facilitated by computational means. Interaction designers aim at designing such interactions to make them more effective and pleasant. Sonic Interaction Design emphasizes the role of sound as a mediator of meaningful interactions. A COST Action on Sonic Interaction Design was run between 2007 and 2011, to pro-actively contribute to the creation and consolidation of new design theories, tools, and practices in this innovative and interdisciplinary domain. The Action stood on four legs: cognitive science, design, interactive art, and information display. This book reports on many research activities that have been conducted over a four-year period, organized as workshops, training schools, short-term scientific missions, and an exhibition.

We describe an emergent field of considerable relevance to the auditory display community-that of sonic interaction design for everyday artifacts. It is positioned at the intersection of auditory display, product interaction design, and ubiquitous computing. We describe an exploration of this field that we have undertaken in a workshop setting, with an international mix of designers, students and researchers, aimed at investigating new roles for auditory display in everyday products, and possible methodologies for designing them. In this paper, we define sonic interaction design, describe the outcome of this workshop, which has been planned as the first in a series, and indicate future directions. We point to new research initiatives, including the European project CLOSED (Closing the Loop of Sound Evaluation and Design), which aims at providing new tools that are needed by designers working in this emerging field. 1 More information about the COST Action IC0601 on Sonic Interaction Design can be found at http://www.cost.esf.org/
The integration of sexualities and gender as the subject matter for education and research in public universities in Mexico is explored using research data such as: statistical data, Internet-based research, and testimonials gathered from a series of interviews with university faculty and students. This article presents a general overview of public policy relating to the integration of sexualities and gender as subjects in public universities and reflections about possible strategies for the further incorporation of gender and sexualities topics in public universities.

Almost 2500 years ago, the Athenian historian Thucydides son of Olorus made a daring prediction that his History of the Peloponnesian War would not simply capture the applause of the moment but rather become a "ktema es aei"; that is, a possession for all future generations. It would not be an overstatement to assert that Thucydides' work has indeed become one of the most cited primary sources in the history of the International Relations discipline. Since the early modern epoch, Thucydides has been a teacher to towering figures such as Hobbes, Lincoln, Marshall, and even Lenin. To paraphrase James Der Derian, "the ghost of Thucydides has never gone away". Little did Thucydides know that even today his book would be at the epicenter of a fervent strategic debate about the future of Sino-American relations in an era of hegemonic transition. The so called "Thucydides trap"a term popularized by the work of Professor Graham Allison has now come to define the strategic Zeitgeist with heads of states from both the United States and China referring to it. Yet, the Thucydides' Trap, as many commentators have repeatedly noted "entraps" Thucydides work into facile strategic analogizing instead of delving deep to extract the nuanced strategic insights that the Athenian historian crystalized in his classic masterpiece.
