Often lightguide fiber processing involves steps that may cause degradation of very high strength or flaw-free, perfect fiber. A very obvious type of degradation is the development of abrasion flaws during handling. Also, heating of a fiber to moderate temperatures (~300 600 C), for instance during the soldering of pigtails, has been shown to result in strength degradation of strong fiber. It has been suggested that the use of HF etching may be a reasonable technique for the elimination of many types of strength-lowering defects. In this paper we discuss early results from the literature on the effects of heating and HF etching on the strength of silica glass and present new results on both.

We review the structure of local Lagrangians and field equations for free bosonic and fermionic gauge fields of mixed symmetry in flat space. These are first presented in a constrained setting extending the metric formulation of linearized gravity, and then the ($\gamma$-)trace constraints on fields and gauge parameters are eliminated via the introduction of auxiliary fields. We also display the emergence of Weyl-like symmetries in particular classes of models in low space-time dimensions.

El trabajo describe una cavidad de 258 m de desarrollo y -70 m de desnivel, desarrollada en una placa de arenisca de edad Eoceno en la serie flysch de Jaizkibel, próxima a Pasaia. Forma parte de un sistema de 400 m de desarrollo y -120 m de desnivel, lo que permite hablar de un auténtico karst en los paquetes gruesos de arenisca de la serie flysh, pero que se genera cuando se dan juntos o coinciden una serie de factores hidrogeológicos locales. La cavidad ha sido excavada por disolución intergranular de la arenisca a lo largo de un extenso sistema de fracturas, posee un río subterráneo, espeleotemas y fauna de interés.

The performance of OpenMP applications executed in multisocket multicore processors can be limited by the memory interface. In a multisocket environment, each multicore processor can present a performance degradation in memory-bound parallel regions when sharing the same Last Level Cache (LLC). We propose a characterization of the performance of parallel regions to estimate cache misses and execution time.

The application of nanotechnology in the food industry has increased in the last 10 years. There are different defi nitions regarding the use of "nano." Different ingredients/nutrients can be delivered at nanoscale and change food formulations and contribute to the development of value added food products. On the other hand, food product shelf life can also be enhanced using different types of packaging designs, applying nanomaterials in their matrices. Nevertheless, the commercialization and use of some nanomaterials may be compromised due to the lack of studies on undesired effects on public health.

Video coding standards, such as MPEG-4, H.264, and VC1, define hybrid transform based block motion compensated techniques that employ almost the same coding tools. This observation has been a foundation for defining the MPEG Reconfigurable Multimedia Coding framework that targets to facilitate multi-format codec design. The idea is to send a description of the codec with the bit stream, and to reconfigure the coding tools accordingly on-the-fly. This kind of approach favors software solutions, and is a substantial challenge for the implementers of mobile multimedia devices that aim at high energy efficiency. In particularly as high definition formats are about to be required from mobile multimedia devices, variable length decoders are becoming a serious bottleneck. Even at current moderate mobile video bitrates software based variable length decoders swallow a major portion of the resources of a mobile processor. In this paper we present a Transport Triggered Architecture (TTA) based programmable implementation for Context Adaptive Binary Arithmetic de-Coding (CABAC) that is used e.g in the main profile of H.264 and in JPEG2000. The solution can be used even for other variable length codes. † Terms ASP and ASIP are used often quite freely but there is a difference. During the design time, ASP allows the customization of all the processor resources, while ASIP allows only the modification of the instruction set.

Transfer pricing (TP) in the banking sector is regarded as a tool to achieve a wide range of objectives in relation to the overall organisational goal. The technological developments have led to dramatic changes in the banking industry to maintain sustainable competitiveness. Since the major source of revenue for the banks is the NII, banks are increasingly utilising Oracle funds transfer pricing (FTP) system to boost the performance of their divisions in terms of contribution to the overall NII. Moreover, the performance appraisal system is carried out through FTP system to improve the overall results. This research mainly deals with the perception of the banks toward FTP and how is it utilised to enhance the performance of the banks to increase the overall profitability. The research examines the effectiveness of TP in the banking sector by exploring the existing literature in relation to FTP in terms of theoretical as well as practical context. The research is conducted on the basis of qualitative research using content analysis technique to analyse annual reports of various banks. Finally, a summary of discussion along with conclusion, reflective summary, limitations and possible suggestions for further research are presented.
