As Biodiesel is emerging as an important promising alternative energy resource which can be used to or even replace the usage of petroleum diesel. Biodiesel is a domestic, renewable fuel for diesel engines derived from natural oils like Edible and Non-Edible oil, and which meets the specifications of ASTM D 6751. Technically, biodiesel is a diesel engine fuel comprised of mono-alkyl esters of long chain fatty acids derived from vegetable oils or animal fats and meeting the requirements of ASTM D 6751. Algae are a filamentous waste plant growing in any type of water such as fresh, sea water etc. Normally algae are regarded as a menace in water bodies. Algae oil is an interesting sustainable feedstock for biodiesel manufacturing. There are various methods for extracting the oil from algae, such as mechanical pressing, hexane solvent extraction etc. The paper discusses experimental method developed for the extraction of oil from algae which is obtained from open pond system. It is observed that the solvent extraction method recovers almost all the oil and leaves behind only 0.5% to 0.7% residual oil in the raw material. Because of the high percentage of recovered oil, solvent extraction is found to be an effective method for extraction of oils and fats, but is having disadvantage of being costly as compared to expeller method. An experimental investigation shows that expeller pressing method can recover 75% of the oil from algae. Even though expeller pressing method is an economical method than the hexane solvent extraction method, further to make this method more effective, some modifications in the design of expeller are required which will increase the recovery of oil.

Of late, the automobiles of all categories are massively increasing which aggravates the dependency on fossil fuel thus, the accessibility of petro-fuel decreases relentlessly. Under these circumstances, the investigations are taking new dimensions to find alternative, renewable with cost-effective fuel exclusively biofuels. However, a newer approach has been attempted for the production of biodiesel from wild stuff of Spirulina algae which is explored directly in its aquatic systems of the natural environment. The chemical extraction process was attempted with wild biomass of algae via pre-treatment for obtaining promising lipid content then; the algal oil (lipid) was subjected to the production of biodiesel through sequential transesterification reactions. The obtained biodiesel was measured as 94.65% produced from 0.920kg of algal oil extracted out of 1.6kg of algal biomass in a stipulated duration of time (2.50hr) taken for attaining maximum temperature. Further, the produced bi...

In this article, various methods including Soxhlet, Bligh & Dyer (B&D) and ultrasonic assisted B&D were investigated on lipid extraction of algal species Chlorella vulgaris. Relative polarity/water content as well as impolar per polar ratios of solvents were considered to optimize the relative proportions of each triplicate agent applying RSM method. It was found that for soxhlet, hexane-methanol (54%-46% respectively) with total lipid extraction of 14.65% and chloroform-methanol (54%-46% respectively) with the extraction of 19.87% were the best set of triplicate where further addition of acetone to first group and ethanol to the second, did not contributed to further extraction. In B&D however,chloroform:methanol:water(50%-35%-15% respectively) reached the all-time maximum of 24%. Osmotic shock as well as ultrasonication contributed to 3.52% of further extraction which is considered to promote the total yield up to almost 15%. From the growth data and fatty acid analysis, the applied method was assessed to be appropriate for biodiesel production both for selectivity and extraction yield.

Bio-diesel is one of the most important suitable oil to elimi-Abstract:- Transportation is the backbone of our society, powering the economies of the world every day. The Transportation network is responsible for a large amount of the hazardous emissions causing global warming and air pollution problems worldwide. Bio-diesel is one of the most important suitable oil to eliminate greenhouse gases emissions and alternative of the fossil fuels. The demand of energy is increasing on day-to-day basis, because enhancement in industrialization and population. Bio-diesel (mono-alkyl-esters) is the substitutive fuel, which obtained through the process of transesterification of monohydric alcohols with triglyceride oil. Bio-diesel oil obtained from the renewable sources of fuel having no properties of degradable and toxic. The waste cooking oil, such as sunflower, canola, soybean, coconut, corn oil, fish oil, rice bran, chicken fat, and algae can be used for preparation of Bio diesel, by adop...
Biodiesel has gained much attention in recent years due to its eco-friendly nature, non-toxic characteristics, biodegradability and lower net carbon cycle compared to conventional diesel fuels. In the current study, potential algal specie Spirogyra were collected from different districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan and employed as a feedstock for biodiesel production. In the first step, oil from algae specie was extracted using n-Hexane and Di-ethyl Ether as solvents, while in the second stage; extracted oil was converted into biodiesel via transestrification reaction. The effects of solvent to oil ratio, size of algal biomass and contact time were studied on the percentage yield of oil extracted. The maximum extracted oil was 0.09 fraction of biomass, by using a blend of both solvents at solvent to biomass ratio of 3.5, algal biomass size of 0.4 mm and contact time of 24 hours. While in transestrification reaction, effects of molar ratio, temperature, reaction time and amount of catalyst (Sodium Hydroxide) were evaluated on the amount of biodiesel produced. Almost 95% conversion of extracted oil into biodiesel was achieved after 25 minutes of contact time at 60 o C with catalyst amount of 0.5% weight of oil and oil to methanol ratio of 8.
