Abstract
Is it essential for an economic power to engage as mediator in international conflicts? What makes big powers intervene in the conflicts of Third World countries? Besides its economic interests, is it an essential attribute of a big power to act as mediator in the major conflicts of the world? It has been a customary characteristic of big powers since the Cold War to use their influence in mediating complex issues which, if successful, further consolidate their position and capacity to engage internationally as mediators. It also might be part of a process as follows: the assumption of economic or military independence; a global interdependent role; and engagement in international conflicts.
