Tectonic events, like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, may generate variations in the local geomagnetic field intensity. To detect possible effects related to seismic activity in central Italy, the INGV (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia) installed a network of four magnetometers in 1989, in a region extending from 41°to 43°latitude N and 12°to 15°longitude E. The study area is characterized by active faulting and seismicity, and by historical destructive earthquakes. The total geomagnetic field intensity was synchronously sampled at the magnetometer sites since July 1989 and averaged on a daily basis. These values were then differentiated with respect to the data recorded at the permanent nearby National Geomagnetic Observatory of L'Aquila (42°23lN, 13°19lE). The aim of our work was to detect possible significant magnetic field variations of tectonic origin. Data have been regularly recorded for about 15 years with some interruptions due to instrumental temporary failures. This data set represents a long series of recordings that is valuable to characterize the local response of each station to the secular variation in a tectonically active area. In this paper we applied a new signal processing on data by means of a wavelet analysis to the differentiated geomagnetic records for the period 2000-2005. In an ongoing paper the same technique is extended back to the remaining ten years of data (1989-1999).

The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) has systematically undertaken the task of making measurements of the Earth's magnetic field in Italy. By tradition and because of the elongated geometric shape of our peninsula and islands, in Italy, a grid of more than 110 points, called the first order repeat stations, with an average spacing around 55-60 km, is in operation. Over this grid the measurements are repeated regularly, every 5 years. A survey of 131 repeat stations of the Italian Magnetic Network (including 2 observatories, 11 stations in Albania, 3 stations in Corsica and 1 in Malta) was carried out between 2009 and 2010 with the main purpose of updating our magnetic cartography. We describe the characteristics of magnetic first and second order networks, the magnetic measurements and the data reduction procedure. In agreement with the recommendations of MagNetE Committee, we report new repeat station data measured and reduced at 2010.0. An analytical expre...

It has been reported that earthquakes and volcanic eruptions produce significant variations in the geomagnetic field. To investigate possible tectonomagnetic effects related to seismic activity, the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica installed a seismomagnetic network in central Italy; the area was selected after a magnetic noise survey. Geomagnetic field intensity data are simultaneously recorded at four magnetometer stations and at L'Aquila Geomagnetic Observatory, which is located in the same area. The data are differentiated in order to detect local magnetic field anomalies. The present study reports geomagnetic field observations in central Italy from July 1989 to March 1995 and also discusses the detectability of a Ž . tectonomagnetic effect in this area. A variation of about 5 nT over a two-month period January-February 1990 has been observed in the geomagnetic field. No other anomaly has been observed, although moderate seismicity occurred in central Italy during the study period. q 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

Journalism and Celebrity, 2020
This is a highly distinctive and historically revisionist account of the relationship between journalism and celebrity. Drawing upon her personal experience as a reporter in the UK as she engages in a thoroughly critical manner with the research literature and media commentary, Bethany Usher presents an account of the role of celebrity within the news industry that is nuanced, thoughtful and compelling. Most importantly, she retrieves the category of the political as the third element required in any contemporary understanding of the cultural function of celebrity journalism. A most welcome and original contribution to the field. Professor Graeme Turner, author of Understanding Celebrity Bethany Usher has produced a remarkable rewriting of how we understand the relationship between celebrity and journalism. With clarity of images, brilliant charts and deep research, she makes sense of the close relationship that the emergence of celebrity has had to both journalism and politics. Her insightful account maps this interweaving of ordinariness, visibility, political and moral value into the contemporary manifestations of new attack journalism and social media reconstructions of the public self. Her work builds to valuable claims about how journalism must understand its affinity with celebrity in our current world and negotiate a better role in this transformed era of "neo-populism", "panopticism" and "synopticism" that are part and parcel of our online culture constitutions of sharedsometimes "celebrified"selves. Professor P. David Marshall, author of Celebrity and Power. We're not short of books on celebrity, but what distinguishes Journalism and Celebrity is its focus both on journalism's role in creating celebrity and the place of celebrity as a founding discourse of journalism. Refusing both populist and pessimistic approaches to the celebritisation of news, Bethany Usher takes a nuanced approach that stresses the need to understand the complex relations between celebrity, journalism and politics. This involves acknowledging and critiquing the worst tendencies of all three whilst at the same time exploring the elements of celebrity and its associated journalism that might contribute positively to the public sphere. The book combines an extremely well-informed historical sweep with a challenging and thought-provoking approach to its subject.

Environmental History, 2016
This volume is a significant contribution to the study of the social and cultural networks that informed the environmental order of the British Empire. It is an unusually well-edited anthology and an excellent and engaging read. What successfully brings the contributions together is a common methodological focus on the importance of networks in the field of environmental history. The volume is a result of a conference at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, and it has, as a result, a refreshingly non-Eurocentric focus with key contributions about historical events mainly in China, Sri Lanka, Australia, and New Zealand. The anthology seeks to unveil now-forgotten pathways of conquest, trade, and power that mobilized the transfer of organisms and commodities throughout Britain's imperial territories in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. At the same time, the contributors attempt to understand the ways in which these networks reordered human societies, nonhuman communities, and even entire landscapes. The volume has two parts: the first set of five articles discusses "Regional Eco-Cultural Networks"; the second set of six articles seeks to locate "Local Eco-Cultural Networks" within the British Empire. The "regional" networks discussed in the first part are perhaps better described as transregional or global because they encompass events happening on different continents in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Nancy J. Jacobs, for example, explains how and why Europeans became authorities on birds in Africa by focusing on their migration. She describes the social and cultural network of the birdwatchers that were required to observe bird routes from southern Africa to Europe, and she argues that these ornithological investigations were
