A Novel Surge Wave Energy Conversion Device - the Wave-wheel

Krishnil Ram
Abstract
This paper introduces a novel wave energy conversion device that uses the dual action of surge and overtopping waves to generate electricity. An overview of existing wave energy converters (WEC’s) and their weakness is presented. Calculation of overtopping parameters using available literature overtopping in dikes is done and used to design a suitable WEC called the wave-wheel. Wave channel tests were conducted on a 1:100 scale model of the device to validate its operation. The device is able to produce continuous electrical power output when a dynamo is connected to its shaft. Power oscillations that are caused by the periodic nature of overtopping are also presented. The device attains an efficiency of 0.14%. Despite its low efficiency, it is argued that the device has good potential as a WEC due to its simplistic design. Several improvements to the device were suggested and will be incorporated in future work on this device.
