Islam reached Lombok Island in the sixteenth century, approximately in 1545, which was brought by Sunan Giri, the son of Sunan Prapen, one of the prominent Islamic preachers known as WalingSongo, through an expedition from Java. Prior to its arrival in the Island, according to some historians, the indigenous Sasak (the indigenous people of Lombok) embraced a traditional belief known as Boda. Historically, since its establishment, Islam has perpetually been expanding despite facing some distinct and contradictory values of local tradition and culture, which leads to a kind of dialectical process and turns in what is known as local Islam such as Islam WetuTelu in Bayan, West Lombok. This article is aimed at revealing the historical root of religious identity of Sasak community. The historical sketch of its religious identity produces a combination of traditional, cultural and religious values of the comers with those of the indigenous people in the past, WetuTelu religion. Present Muslims in Lombok assume that the existence of traditional Islam is due to an incomplete process of Islamization in the Island.
Among several shifts in the anthropology of the last two decades has been a growing awareness that the anthropology of remote locations must concern itself with a kind of cultural politics in which resistance and accommodation to globalisation play an increasing role. While varieties, strategies and outcomes vary from armed struggle, nativism or creolisation to an enthusiastic embrace of western consumerism (marked perhaps by a transitional phase of cultural humiliation; see Sahlins 1992), the encounter with modernity is something that affects everyone at the close of the century. This is as true in the western Pacific as it is in the rest of the world, and it has produced a situation in which Melanesian anthropology - for long a classical site for traditional ethnography - finds itself undergoing its own identity crisis in the light of these developments....
A publication 'Mataräkau'was developed as a collection of narratives that acted as a mechanism for knowledge transmission and to make the research outcomes more widely accessible. Kajian ini dilaksanakan bagi membincangkan perbezaan budaya dalam terjemahan lagu-lagu P. Ramlee yang melibatkan budaya Melayu dan budaya barat. Objektif kajian ini adalah untuk mengenal pasti kesalahan terjemahan yang terdapat dalam lagu-lagu P. Ramlee dan membincangkan perbezaan budaya yang terdapat dalam terjemahan lagu-lagu P. Ramlee. Tiga buah lagu P. Ramlee telah dijadikan sebagai bahan kajian iaitu lagu Aci-aci Buka Pintu, Mencece dan lagu Bunyi Gitar. Pengumpulan data bagi kajian ini adalah melalui kaedah analisis kandungan. The article draws on the Kongo term mpambu nzila of crossroads, that equally signifies altar, to discuss the paintings and drawings of Cuban-born artist José Bedia. He is a practitioner of Palo Briyumba, a syncretic Afro-Cuban religion that combines Kongo religious beliefs, Regla de Ocha, Spiritism, and Catholicism. The article examines six works by the artist from 1984 to 1999 and how Bedia represents Palo in his art. Additionally, the centrality of the nganga (a cauldron that paleros use to work for and protect them) is discussed historically, philosophically, and religiously as a physical and spiritual embodiment of the crossroads. Bedia’s work is also analyzed using the Sankofa bird as metaphor (of flying forward and looking back) and as an example of the West African notion of coolness. The article also examines Palo as a de-colonial way of knowing and ends with the crossroads through the example of Lucero Mundo (Elegguá).

ABSTRACT This thesis investigated the problem of the concept of man in the frame-work of the Bantu Ontology. The case study for this thesis was the Chagga who are the Bantu group situated in north eastern Tanzania surrounding Mount Kilimanjaro. Drawing the sample of the study from three Wards of Okaoni, Kibosho Mashariki and Kibosho Magharibi of Moshi District Council the study employs ethno-philosophical approach focussed on the gathering qualitative data some of which are presented in tables and charts, while most of the stuff derived from both group and personal interviews are presented thematically and in a discourse form. The major instruments of data collection were the interview schedules. In addition to the empirical findings, the secondary data collected in the style of literature review are presented in Chapter 3 and 4. The findings of this thesis reveal that philosophy of the Bantu is the custody of the society rather than individual’s intellectual property. Man is conceived as an eternal rational being validated by the right relationships to the ontological network of the Supreme Being (SB), Lively Living (LL), the Living Dead (LD), non-living existents and the nature. For the first time the Bantu Moral Pendulum, Bantu Panorama of the Soul (BOPS) and Bantu Flow of Life Energy (BOFE) emerge within the Bantu Philosophy. At last the researcher recommends the areas of the further research with aims to extend this study.

Teacher educators have a very daunting task requiring currency in their discipline, curricular, policy and institutional imperatives as well as pedagogical and cultural issues. Tertiary institutions are facing increasing expectations to cater for and increase retention of underrepresented groups, whilst class sizes increase and face-to-face contact decreases. This paper outlines a case study of two lecturers (one European and one Pacific Island) who developed a successful partnership to raise student retention and achievement within a cohort of Pacific Islanders (an underrepresented group in all New Zealand universities). Key aspects which formed the foundation threads of this successful partnership are elaborated upon via the metaphor of weaving. Weaving is a very valuable and highly prized skill and art form amongst many indigenous groups including those of the Pacific Islands. Weaving in the Pacific Island context involves group work, with weavers supporting each other and sharing their expertise.
