This article reviews and comments on Polyglot: How I Learn Languages, a recent English language edition of Kató Lomb’s Így tanulok nyelveket, which was originally published in Hungarian in 1970. The article situates the work and provides a brief biographical sketch of the author, followed by an outline of the book. The article then examines more closely some of the issues raised by Lomb, such as adult learning, awareness in language learning, attitude versus aptitude, the use of a multipronged approach, taking personal responsibility, the role of regularity, as well as that of active and explorative reading, and the development of the four skills. Finally, it highlights the ongoing significance of Lomb’s seminal work for language learners, teachers and researchers.

The InLéctor project aims to promote reading in original language, offering an interactive scenario which facilitates foreign language teaching and selflearning, as well as the study of literature. In order to achieve this aim, the project develops computational techniques which provide automatically generation of bilingual e-books, incorporating dictionaries, ontologies and audios. Bilingual reading offers the option of moving from the original text to the translated one with a single click. The audio support is based on the human reading of the work in its original language. Moreover, it is planned to incorporate an interactive dictionary service which will show in advance the most difficult words in the text according to the language level of the user. Augmented information will also provide links to encyclopedic entries, images and audio directly related to the fragment of the text being read. The project ensures the creation and distribution of these parallel books in different output formats (html, epub and mobi), which are compatible with the most common tablets and e-books nowadays. The literary works and their translations are published in the public domain. The developed programs are based on free software and will also be published under a free license. : 64-78 | 69 encyclopedic, providing information about people, places, geographical or historical events; 2) visual, offering relevant images about the text we are reading, for example art works, monuments or landscapes; and 3) sound, offering relevant musical excerpts about the text being read. The encyclopedic augmented information will come mainly from the Wikipedia 3 . Regarding the latter two aspects, images and sound, Wikicommons 4 will serve as the main source. Once all these functionalities are conjugated, a digital book becomes a multimedia product, with text, images and sound.

Foreign-language comics are potentially an enjoyable way to learn foreign languages. However, the difficulty of reading authentic material makes them inaccessible to novice learners. We present the Foreign Manga Reader, a system that helps readers comprehend foreign-language written materials and learn multiple aspects of the language. Specifically, it generates a sentence-structure visualization to help learners understand the grammar, pronounces dialogs to improve listening comprehension and pronunciation, and translates dialogs, phrases, and words to teach vocabulary. Learners can use the system to match their experience level, giving novices access to dialog-level translations and pronunciations, and more advanced learners with access to information at the level of phrases and individual words. The annotations are automatically generated, and can be used with arbitrary written materials in several languages. A preliminary study suggests that learners find our system useful for understanding and learning from authentic foreign-language material.

CALL for widening participation: short papers from EUROCALL 2020, 2020
Learning and Reading Assistant (LARA) is an open source platform that enables conversion of plain texts into an interactive multimedia form designed to support second- and foreign-language (L2) learners. In this workshop, we illustrate the open source aspects using collaborative work carried out during a six-week summer project at the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies. Three undergraduate level students extended the platform in different directions in cooperation with other members of the international LARA team. The three subprojects were respectively concerned with adding automatically generated flashcards, adding multimedia versions of poetic texts in the archaic language Old Norse, and extending LARA to allow the inclusion of sign language content in Icelandic sign language – Íslenskt TáknMál (ÍTM). All three reached successful conclusions.

As English speakers we take it for granted that we can walk into a library, a bookshop or a home and find a great book, regardless of our age. We know there is a book awaiting us that will elicit wonder or laughter or reveal something new about the world to us. For the thousands of Territorians who speak Indigenous languages at home, this reality doesn’t exist. But why?
