loss function different types.
arXiv (Cornell University), 2023
lastminute.com group, Switzerland Most state-of-the-art machine learning techniques revolve around the optimisation of loss functions. Defining appropriate loss functions is therefore critical to successfully solving problems in this field. We present a survey of the most commonly used loss functions for a wide range of different applications, divided into classification, regression, ranking, sample generation and energy based modelling. Overall, we introduce 33 different loss functions and we organise them into an intuitive taxonomy. Each loss function is given a theoretical backing and we describe where it is best used. This survey aims to provide a reference of the most essential loss functions for both beginner and advanced machine learning practitioners.

The choice and design of loss functions is discussed. Particularly when computational methods like cross-validation are applied, there is no need to stick to "standard" loss functions such as the L 2 -loss (squared loss). Our main message is that the choice of a loss function in a practical situation is the translation of an informal aim or interest that a researcher may have into the formal language of mathematics. The choice of a loss function cannot be formalized as a solution of a mathematical decision problem in itself. An illustrative case study about the location of branches of a chain of restaurants is given. Statistical aspects of loss functions are treated, such as the distinction between applications of loss functions to prediction and esti-mation problems and the direct definition of estimators to minimize loss functions. The impact of subjective decisions to the design of loss functions is also emphasized and discussed.

Recent developments in AI have made it ubiquitous, every industry is trying to adopt some form of intelligent processing of their data. Despite so many advances in the field, AI’s full capability is yet to be exploited by the industry. Industries that involve some risk factors still remain cautious about the usage of AI due to the lack of trust in such autonomous systems. Presentday AI might be very good in a lot of things but it is very bad in reasoning and this behavior of AI can lead to catastrophic results. Autonomous cars crashing into a person or a drone getting stuck in a tree are a few examples where AI decisions lead to catastrophic results. To develop insight and generate an explanation about the learning capability of AI, we will try to analyze the working of loss functions. For our case, we will use two sets of loss functions, generalized loss functions like Binary cross-entropy or BCE and specialized loss functions like Dice loss or focal loss. Through a series of exper...

In this paper, a new family of F-Loss distributions known as cosine F-Loss is proposed. This is an extension of the F-Loss family of John Abonongo, Ivivi J. Mwaniki and Jane A. Aduda 82 distributions by appropriate use of trigonometric functions. The proposed method ensures that no additional parameter(s) is/are introduced in the bit to make the F-Loss family of distributions flexible. The mathematical properties are derived and maximum likelihood estimates of the model parameters are obtained. Three special distributions are proposed; cosine Weibull loss, cosine Burr III loss and cosine Lomax loss. The densities exhibit different kinds of right-skewed, decreasing, reversed-J, and approximately symmetric shapes. The hazard rate functions show different kinds of increasing, decreasing, increasing-constant-increasing, increasing-constantdecreasing, reversed-J, and upside down bathtub shapes. Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to assess the behavior of the estimators. It is realized that the estimators are consistent. The applications of the proposed distributions are presented with insurance loss datasets. The results show that the cosine Burr III loss distribution provides the best parametric fit for both the business interruption claims and the automobile bodily injury claims datasets compared to the other classical heavy-tailed distributions considered.

The property that the conditional mean is the unrestricted optimal forecast characterizes the Bregman class of loss functions, while the property that the α-quantile is the unrestricted optimal forecast characterizes the generalized α-piecewise linear (α-GPL) class. However, in settings where the forecaster's choice of forecasts is limited to the support of the predictive distribution, different Bregman losses lead to different forecasts. This is not true for the α-GPL class: the failure of identification is more fundamental. Motivated by these examples, we state simple conditions that can be used to ascertain whether loss functions that are consistent for the same statistical functional become identifiable when off-support forecasts are disallowed. We also study the identifying power of unrestricted forecasts within the class of smooth, convex loss functions. For any such loss ℓ, the set of losses that are consistent for the same statistical functional as ℓ is a tiny subset of this class in a precise mathematical sense. Finally, we illustrate the identification problem that is posed by the non-uniqueness of consistent losses for the moment-based loss function estimation methods proposed in the literature.

Article Type: Full Length Research Article A study on performance characteristics of a centrifugal pump was carried out in the hydraulic laboratory. A half horse power (hp) motor driven centrifugal pump was used. The performance characteristics of the centrifugal pump was tested under varying proportions of suction and delivery lifts for a wide range of total lifts. The pump was operated for a total lifts of 2.00, 4.00, 5.50 and 7.40 m. The results obtained reveal that for a given total lift, the efficiencies of the pump varied with the different ratios between suction and delivery lifts. For the total lift of 2.00 m, both the efficiency and discharge decreased with the increase of suction lift. For the total lifts of 4.00, 5.50 and 7.40 m, the maximum pump efficiency was obtained when the suction lift was at or around 2.00 m. This suggests that the pump operates more efficiently when the suction lift was at about 2.00 m, irrespective of delivery lift. The study results also showed ...
The problem in question is relevant since the process of detonation and shockwaves collision and recompression of detonation products is a challenging task in terms of gas dynamics. The paper is aimed at addressing this problem that would enable to intentionally control the process of transferring energy of explosive to environment through choosing optimal structure of charge or mode of triggering. The problem is examined mostly through method for numerical simulation of non-steady detonation and gas dynamic processes occurring while blast-hole charge is exploded. An attribute-based pattern of process for transferring energy of explosion products to environment when blasting charges of different structures and with different parameters of triggering modes was pre-investigated. The paper describes mathematical model of calculating parameters of dynamic loads on a blast-hole (hole) wall when exploding charges of various structures in various triggering modes. The results of calculating parameters of stress wave generated in rock mass by explosive charge blast and gas dynamic parameters in powder chamber of a blast-hole (well) were presented. The obtained coefficients of explosion pulse effect allow to correct calculations of unit rate of differently-structured charges.
