Finds of Archeological Excavation at Seyed Khatoon Cave, Arsanjan, Fars
Brief Articles 12 th Annual Symposium on the Iranian Archaeology, 2014
In 2011, the Research Center of the Iranian Cultural Heritage, Handicraft, and Tourism Organization and the University of Tsukuba began a joint archaeological expedition to Arsanjan in the Fars province of Iran. One purpose of this new expedition is to find evidence of the distribution of Homo sapiensto the southern Zagros region. Studies in molecular biology and archaeology over the last two decades indicate two probable Out-of-Africa routes of Homo sapiens: one from east Africa through the Sinai Peninsula into the Levant and/or through the southern Arabian Peninsula to the Iranian coast. If the latter route (so-called southern route) was used, the southern Zagros becomes a focal point for the dispersal of all modern humans. If the former route was used, the southern Zagros is nonetheless important as a place through which modern humans migrated eastward. To address this topic, we chose to excavate the large site of Tang-e Eshikan Cave, locally referred to as Eshkaft Seyed Khatoun (the site’s old Arsanjan register number is A5-3; see Ikeda 1978).

In the chairmanship of Asst. Prof. Dr. Şengül Aydıngün from Kocaeli University, after getting the permission from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey in 2007, a scientifi c team begun a survey to gather more information about the prehistoric periods of Istanbul/Turkey. The fi rst survey point was the Küçükçekmece Lake environment. Küçükçekmece lake is situated 20 km West of the Bosphorus, İstanbul. To the North there are small rivers feeding the lake. The two most important ones are Sazlidere and Eskinoz. The banks of these rivers near the lake had to be the most probable settlement places. The West Bank of Küçükçekmece Lake remains within the boundaries of the town of Avcilar-Firuzkoy. Our investigations brought us very important fi ndings concerning pottery and stone tools. These were similar to the Low and Upper Paleolithic stone tools and Neolithic pottery as yet unseen anywhere near Küçükçekmece. The vases were poorly fi red, hand made from black clay containing different minerals. The lack of straw in their texture made us think that these pieces might belong to a time even previous to the beginning of agriculture. The second survey point was Silivri-Danamandıra village. We found there a cave including chalcolithic pottery and some rock carvings with a man and some graffi tis at the mouth of the cave.

The cave of Khorbas is one of outstanding important examples of rock architecture in the Persian Gulf region which is located southwest of town of Qeshm. In present article we shall describe the structure of the site and provide a geological overview of the area, as well. Considering the features of the site, existence of various historic sites all around the area and also the fact that several rock chamber tombs have been discovered on the island, it is highly probable that the cave belongs to historical era (Parthian or most probably Sasanian era). Based on its form and location, the Khorbas cave could have served various functions including for residential, defensive or religious purposes. Here we shall also provide a comparative study of the rock architecture of the site with other examples discovered across Iran. Finally, we have made some proposals regarding further studies on the site and protective measures that could help preserve it. Keywords: Archaeology, Khorbas cave, Persian gulf, Qeshm Island

This volume is the report on the results of the third excavation season of the Saudi-French Archaeological Project at Madâ'in Sâlih, Nabataean Hegra in northwest Saudi Arabia (MAEE, SCTA, CNRS, Univ Paris 1, IFPO). Apart from the results obtained in the different excavation areas (both in the residential area and in a triclinium south the Jabal Ithlib, the reader will find preliminary syntheses on the macro-vegetal remains (Ch. Bouchaud), on the pottery (C. Durand and Y. Gerber), on the geomagnetic survey (Chr. Benech), on the coins (Chr. Augé) and on the faunal remains (J. Studer).
This volume is the report on the results of the fourth excavation season of the Saudi-French Archaeological Project at Madâ'in Sâlih, ancient Hegra in the Nabataean kingdom, in north-west Saudi Arabia (MAEE, SCTA, CNRS, Univ Paris 1, IFPO). Apart from the results obtained in the different excavation areas (both in the residential area and in tomb IGN 117), the reader will find a study on the cairns/tumuli of the site (W. Abu-Azizeh) as well as intermediary reports on the geophysical detection (Chr. Benech), the fauna (J. Studer) and the pottery (C. Durand).
