LSA4 Post- lesson Evaluation

Post-Lesson Evaluation NAME OF TEACHER: Paulina Klaudia Wozniak LESSON: LSA4 SKILL OR SYSTEM: Grammar TITLE OF ASSIGNMENT: Helping upper-intermediate learners use conditional sentences to talk about hypothetical situations in the present and past DATE OF LESSON: 24/07/2018 NUMBER OF WORDS: 485 Planning and outcomes The lesson went quite well, however, not exactly as planned. Before the lesson, I thought that I had assigned enough time for both meaning, form and pronunciation clarification stages. However, these stages took more time and I had to react and adapt my lesson to the situation. First of all, I led the students through the stages rather than leave it to students. Nevertheless, I tried to apply the guided discovery approach as much as I could. When we got to the restricted practice I decided to give the students as much time as they needed to complete the task. This stage was important as the questions students formed were to be used in the freer practice stage. Because of those changes, I had to shorten the freer practice and feedback and skip the flexi-stage. I believe I have achieved my main and subsidiary aims as students used conditional sentences to talk about hypothetical situations in the present and past and they did contrast the two conditionals and practised making questions. Strengths and weaknesses Students enjoyed this lesson and worked really hard. They liked the lead-in and some of the students commented after the lesson that they were going to memorise the lyrics to practise conditional structures. The lesson was challenging but the students left the classroom with the feeling that they have learnt something new. I monitored the students very closely and helped whenever necessary. Students enjoyed the freer practice activity and the possibility to hypothesize about the present and future. However, the lesson was very teacher-centred. As I noticed students struggled with the guided discovery I wanted to help and instead of asking students to answer the concept checking questions and completing the formulas in pairs, I turned it into a more open-class activity. Also, the lesson was more challenging than I had expected it to be, which is not bad but it affected my timing and my role as the teacher. Because of the timing, I stopped following the lesson plan and just dealt with the lesson stage by stage which means I could have used too much TTT. Also, I think I should have chosen different sentences to drill as the songs’ lyrics were too long and too complicated and because of that I decided on the spot to drill only chorally. Consolidation and follow-up Students definitely need some more practice to consolidate what they have learnt in this lesson. I think they would really benefit from doing more activities focusing on forms used in both types of conditionals. It would also be good for them to practice the difference in meaning. Generally speaking, they understood it but some more practice would make them feel more comfortable and fluent. Also, during this lessons students struggled with the verb form after would, I think the group could benefit from a revision of modal verbs and verb patterns in general.
