In 1860, renowned natural philosopher (now referred to as a ‘scientist’ or, more specifically in the case of Clerk Maxwell, a ‘physicist’) James Clerk Maxwell wrote ‘Valentine from a Telegraph Clerk ♂ [male] to a Telegraph Clerk ♀ [female]’ (Harman, 2001).[1] The short poem was a slightly tongue-in-cheek ode to the romance of the electric telegraph littered with references to manufacturers of batteries used in electrical telegraphy around this time such as John Daniell, Alfred Smee, and William Grove and electrical units (now SI derived units) such as Ohm, Weber, Farad and Volt (Mills, 1995). Although intended as slightly tongue-in-cheek, Maxwell’s short ode can be read as a state of play of electrical telegraphy as it stood in 1860 when Britain dominated the limited undersea electrical telegraph network as it existed at the time and continued to do so as the network expanded to a global interconnected electrical network by the end of the nineteenth century.

The present study conducted on Chaudhary Charan Singh University library (CCSUL) Meerut to explore the extent of Human Resource Management (HRM) usually practiced by them. The study also examined the existing UGC staff formula in order to make comparisons with the data collected from the CCSUL. The study is based on a combination of employees data got from the library office and Deputy Librarian and observation methods to examine the nature and type of library human resources, their professional categories, management issues including staff selection and recruitment, job analysis methods, performance evaluation, and promotion, supporting human resources development (HRD) programmes, etc. Finally, the paper provided suggestions for HRM practices and future directions in the best interest of CCSUL.
General Robert Clerk, patron in the 1760s of one of Robert Adam’s earliest London town houses, has remained a shadowy figure for Adam scholars, with seemingly little documentary material about his life to draw upon, but this is no longer the case. He was well known in political, literary and military circles and there are now plentiful clues to be found as to his career, his character and his often unusual opinions on all manner of subjects – including architecture. Much of this is brought together here for the first time. As to Clerk’s house, designed expressly for him and his wife-to-be Elizabeth, Countess of Warwick, it has long been recognized that it was not built exactly to Adam’s known plans. Previous studies have provided important new information and fresh insights but none has been able to recreate with certainty the original layout of Clerk House nor explain fully the prolonged, complicated story of its construction and occupation. This essay, which stems from research for the forthcoming Survey of London volumes on St Marylebone, aims to address these and other aspects of the building’s history and illustrates for the first time a newly discovered first-floor plan of 1775, apparently in the hand of Lady Warwick herself.

The development of most large and complex systems necessarily involves many people—each with their own perspectives on the system defined by their knowledge, responsibilities, and commitments. To address this we have advocated distributed development of specifications from multiple perspectives. However, this leads to problems of identifying and handling inconsistencies between such perspectives. Maintaining absolute consistency is not always possible.

Abstract: This case-study research intends to achieve oral communication skills through conducting activities for librarians to improve their speaking skills in a private bilingual university in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. The series of techniques implemented to collect data include surveys, multimedia and daily journals. After applying these techniques, data gathering evinced the difficulties librarians could have at the moment of assisting people who requested library services in English. To solve such difficulties, this study aimed to discern how the implementation of free communicative activities could improve the librarians' english speaking skills. Since the aim of this research was to stimulate librarians' ability to communicate in the target language, the implementation of ESP lessons for librarians was proposed as a method to achieve such objective. The latter was based on a learner-centered approach that suited to the needs of that specific context. In that sense, Our ESP lessons were designed to allow librarians to develop strategies to offer library services and guide library users using English as the target language. Keywords: ESP speaking activities, learner-centered approach, free speaking skills
