Tolkien Studies, 2018
Tolkien wrote many forewords, prefaces, and introductory notes over his long career, both to his own and to others' works. This "paratextual" material is often overlooked but is quite interesting in its own right when examined as a body. Writing an introduction for another's work is what Diana Pavlac Glyer (adopting terms from the work of Karen Burke LeFevre) would call the act of a "resonator"—a form of collaboration (in the broadest sense of collaboration) that encourages, supports, and promotes the work of another writer (68–69) and is especially valuable coming from an established scholar sponsoring the work of someone relatively new to the field. In Tolkien's case, for many of these works he was also an "editor," even if not acknowledged as such on the title page, who took care to read the manuscript carefully and "offer feedback or advice that result[ed] in very specific changes" (101), in some instances even working with the author over a period of years
This paper addresses the work of the Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto in collaboration with members of the Huni Kuin people, creating art installations in Brazil, Spain and Austria. It deals with the arrival of Brazilian Indians both into the urban circuit of ayahuasca and into art institutions. These new forms of shamanism and ayahuasca circulate through national and international urban networks showing the great vigor and adaptability of indigenous contemporary traditions. On the other hand, they raise controversial issues, linked to the respect of collective and ancient intellectual property and to the stereotyped representation of Others. Further, the consumption of ayahuasca in Brazil is limited to certain settings and abroad is often illegal. It will be argued that both the expansion of ayahuasca use and the insertion of indigenous arts in museums and galleries, point to a creative and fertile intercultural dialogue, but also raise issues about cultural “authenticity,” appropriation, and commodification.

The anatomy of the uterus and its constituent parts was an essential section in early modern medical treatises, both general texts and specialist texts in gynaecology and obstetrics. In this paper, I examine the section of Rodrigo de Castro’s De uniuersa mulierum medicina devoted to the subject (chapters 2 and 3 of Book 1, Part 1 “Theoria”), both as regards what he says about the anatomical characteristics of these parts and the controversies and questions of morality associated with the uterus.

This study investigates the historical evidence for the widespread pop culture assertion, disseminated through popular histories, novels, and spiritual tourism, that the medieval Cathars of southern France treasured a tradition that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married and had children, and, as such, the holy couple provides a model for human marriage affirmative of the sacred feminine. The medieval sources indicate that while there are a few testimonies of Cathar belief in a spousal relationship between Christ and the Magdalene, and a notion of female deities married to the good God and his evil counterpart, these doctrines appear to be based on literalistic interpretations of scriptural passages and well-known Catholic metaphors. Although Christianity can benefit from the restoration of Mary Magdalene to her deserved apostolic status, the humanization of Jesus, the recognition of the female divine, and the affirmation of sexuality, medieval Cathar doctrines offer little support for these contemporary concerns.

Two types of lager pale beers were produced at industrial scale according to German Beer Purity Law using the same brewing procedure, but different hop varieties. Beer phenols issued from malt and hop can contribute directly to several characteristics of beer, mainly flavor, astringency, haze, body, and fullness. The aim of this paper was to analyze simple phenolic compounds, total polyphenols and total flavonoids contents, antioxidant activity in raw materials (malt and hops) and in samples taken out from several production stages (after wort production, boiling, fermentation, filtering and pasteurisation). Eighteen different phenolic compounds which belong to the groups of hydroxybenzoic and hydroxycinnamic acid derivates, flavan-3-ols, flavonols and procyanidins dimers were analysed. Among all tested phenolic compounds, 9 compounds were identified in malt, 13 in hops, while 10 in samples taken from the brewing process. Based on the obtained results, it is suggested that the choice of hops is very important for obtaining the desired beer quality and to establish its shelf life.

This study investigated the factors that influenced the banana marketing chain and their impact on market dynamics in Palimbang as the banana market in Palimbang was a crucial agricultural product. In the Philippines, the banana industry played a vital role in local economies, with the country ranking third globally in banana production. Despite its significance, various challenges, including marketing bottlenecks, hindered profitability and fair pricing for consumers. These bottlenecks often resulted in reduced income for farmers and limited access to markets. Utilizing a quantitative approach, data was collected from 52 survey participants using random sampling technique. The findings indicated that the interconnection between marketing and production significantly affected farm outputs, often leading to stagnation or decline. This marketing constraint was crucial for enhancing profitability and ensuring affordable banana prices for rural consumers. The study revealed that the majority of the participants were well-informed about the banana marketing chain and its determinants, regardless of the scale of production. The consensus was that these factors greatly influenced the market flow in Palimbang. Hence, the agro-industry marketing chain for bananas in Palimbang played a critical role in the community’s economy, with marketing constraints being a key element in securing better returns and fair pricing for consumers. By improving the supply chain and ensuring fair pricing mechanisms, the lives of farmers could have been enhanced significantly. Moreover, boosting the banana industry would have had a positive ripple effect on the overall economy of Palimbang, making it an essential area for development and investment.
