Statistical Universals about Definite Articles

2018, Contrastive Linguistics

The paper presents a search for statistical universals concerning definite articles. The study is based on information on 500 languages taken from the _World Atlas of Language Structures_ and other resources. The chi-squared test of independence is used to identify morphological, syntactic and other features which correlate with the presence of a definite article. Most of these are related to word order or to the syntactic makeup of the language (articles are less common in left-branching and synthetic languages). These correlations are then checked for validity across the six macroareas of WALS. Some parallels are drawn between the discovered associations and known universals.
