The Association for the Study of Nationalities (ASN) is the largest international network of scholars engaged in the study of national, identity, and state-building issues in a vast geographical area whose core, historically, included several empires. ASN has been holding an Annual World Convention at Columbia University since 1996 and publishes the journals Nationalities Papers and Ethnopolitics. “Empires and Nations” is the fifth European summer conference co-sponsored by ASN since 2001, and the second organized by Sciences Po, which launched the successful series of ASN summer academic events in July 2001 with a conference on “Citizenship and Nationality.” Summer conferences were also held in Forli, Italy (2002), Warsaw (2004) and Belgrade (2006).

This paper is a part of the major study of the Republic of Karachaevo-Cherkessia (KChR), an important player on the geopolitical map of Russia’s North Caucasus. By taking a close look at the Batalpashinsk Cossacks from historical, social, and cultural perspectives, this work will attempt to analyze their changing role in this region. The role of local Cossack governance in the development of civil society and the strengthening of democracy in this Republic is on the rise. It is promoted through Christian-Islamic co-existence and interaction, support of the old institutions of fraternity and brotherhood, such as kunachestvo, as well as development of the new ones among the republic’s many nationalities. In contemporary post-Soviet studies, there is no comprehensive study of the Batalpashinsk Cossacks, in particular, nor of the socio-political situation in Karachaevo-Cherkessia, in general. While aiming at filling in this gap, this research will help to expand our knowledge of the North Caucasus as a strategically important region in the southern borderlands of Russia.

Divine Grace according to St. Cyril of Alexandria #7/423 - Panel Patristics 4-7/3/2019 In this paper it will be presented the Cyrilian interpretation of the term "Grace"-"Χάρις", which is connected to the Trinitarian and Christological interpretation of biblical passages. Using also the previous patristic tradition (e.g. Apostolic fathers, Athanasius of Alexandria and the Cappadocians) which St. Cyril quotes, we will try to underline the role of "Enhypostatic Grace" -"ἐνυπόστατος Χάρις" of God to the divine Economy and the relation between Grace and Salvation to the early Church Fathers as a response to the contemporary theological and terminological approaches.

Sponsored by the International Institute at the University of Michigan and published by Duke University Press, this series is centered around cultural and historical studies of power, politics, and the state-a fi eld that cuts across the disciplines of history, sociology, anthropology, po liti cal science, and cultural studies. Th e focus on the relationship between state and culture refers both to a methodological approach-the study of politics and the state using culturalist methods-and a substantive one that treats signifying practices as an essential dimension of politics. Th e dialectic of politics, culture, and history fi gures prominently in all the books selected for the series.

Diante das exorbitantes taxas de criminalidade verificadas principalmente nos países em desenvolvimento, um dos fatores mais importantes e capazes de impedir sua evolução se refere ao efeito deterrence. Este corresponde a existência de elementos dissuasórios que agem no sentido de desestimular o avanço do crime, com destaque para aqueles relacionados aos mecanismos da justiça e da polícia, denotados por Becker (1968). Dessa forma, este estudo inova ao considerar tais mecanismos em conjunto, representados pelos gastos públicos per capita com o sistema judiciário e o policiamento, respectivamente, e seus efeitos sobre as taxas de homicídios no Brasil durante o período 2005-2013. Para tal, utilizou-se um painel dinâmico, onde os resultados demonstram que apenas os gastos per capita com justiça impactam sobre a criminalidade, mas de forma positiva, o que levanta questionamentos a respeito da capacidade alocativa dos recursos públicos no intuito de deter o avanço do crime no país.
