Research Questions: Primary Problem: What are the effects of technology to the communication process within families? Specific Problem: How does technology affects the communication process within families? What is the role of technology in communication process within families? What are the disadvantages of technology to the communication process? Introduction Move 1: Technology in today's world offers a lot of ways to communicate effectively so that every member of a family can keep in touch. From text messaging, Skype, Webcams, Facebook, Twitter and Emails, the facilitation of communication has never been more available. However, there are times when the one-on-one communication between human beings falls through the cracks and technology can take control over a family. There is no doubt about the way we communicate with our family members today has changed dramatically in recent years. Just a decade ago, text messaging, blogging, and emails were not methods of family communication. Today, they are widely used by families around the world. For example, parents use text messages to remind children of their curfews. Children send emails to their parents to give them their Christmas lists. College students use Web cameras to say good night to their family member who live hundreds of miles away. These are just a few of the many ways in which technology has changed the way families communicate with one another in today's modern world. Some people say that technology is impacting families in a negative way. For example, instead of playing games or eating dinner together, more and more families are instead turning on the television, using the computer, and constantly text messaging on their phones. Some people believe that families are ditching the real world in favor of the cyber world. Other people argue that technology is essential to good family communication in today's society. As parents and children have different agendas and interests, the widespread use of cell phones and the Internet help them stay in touch and communicate regularly. (https://www.ukessays.com/essays/media/the-impact-of-technology-on-familycommunication-media-essay.php) Technology is a powerful tool that used to connect people with education, communication, and entertainment. The influence of social media and technology affects every family in many ways. The greatest argument is whether the rapid growth of technology is positively or negatively affecting the relationships we have. (http://familytech.com/how-technology-affects-familydynamics/) The development of technology has considerably improved our lifestyle. It has made its impact felt on each and every aspect of life, including communication techniques. The development of communication has seen a huge progress. Each century has seen a new addition to the ever-growing list of means of communication. The invention of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell in the year 1875 was the first technological invention that impacted communication in humans to a massive extent. Other subsequent inventions like that of the Internet, cell phone, etc., further eased and changed the world of communication
Human Communication in a Digital Age: Perspectives on Interpersonal Communication in the Family, 2019
With the evolution of the digital era characterised by human-computer interaction, there has been a marked difference in the manner in which humans communicate. This revolution in patterns of communication from face-to-face interpersonal contact to human-machine communication is enabled by the affordances of technology. Using the family unit in Nigeria as a case study, this study examines the changes in one-on-one communication among family members, as a result of constant engagement with digital technologies. It conceptualises the family as a unit comprising two or more persons living together who are related by blood, marriage, adoption or social affiliation. The survey research design was adopted, and structured questionnaires were administered on 370 respondents in the 37 local council development areas of Lagos state, south west Nigeria. Findings indicate that most family members lose interest in communicating interpersonally with each other due to constant engagement with technologies. The study also finds that reduced cues and non-selfdisclosure often pulls family members apart rather than bringing them close together. Key recommendations include that strong family relationships should transcend the mere acquisition of digital competencies, tools and technologies. It suggests that the attributes at the core of humanness should not be lost as a result of constant engagement with communication technologies. Keywords: human communication, humanness, digital communication, communication devices, digital age.

New technologies are radically changing the way that families connect with one another: we can text our teenagers from work, eat dinner with far-away parents via video link, and instantly upload and share photos after a family day out. Whether we are bridging time or distance, and whether we are enhancing our closest relationships or strengthening the bonds of extended family, as computer technologies alter the communication landscape, they in turn are changing the way we conduct and experience family life. This state of the art volume explores the impact of new communication systems on how families interact how they share their lives and routines, engage in social touch, and negotiate being together or being apart by considering a range of different family relationships that shape the nature of communication. Composed of three sections, the first looks at what is often the core of a family, the couple, to understand the impact of technology on couple relationships, communication, a...

This study explores how technology affects the interaction dynamics between parents and children in the family sphere. This study uses library research with integrative and comprehensive analysis in investigating and analyzing various related literature sources to understand the effect of technology use on parent-child interaction in the family context. The findings of this study highlight that the use of technology significantly impacts the interaction between parents and children in the family. The use of technology, especially when it is not regulated correctly, tends to reduce the time parents and children should spend together. However, it should be recognized that technology also has the potential to be a valuable tool, mainly when used wisely and as a positive educational resource. Therefore, effective management related to the use of technology in the family environment plays a crucial role in maintaining this balance. Parents have a responsibility to set healthy rules and boundaries regarding the use of technology, as well as to educate children about digital ethics. In addition, parents' active involvement in using technology with their children becomes crucial. With a wise and sustainable approach to technology, families can achieve a balance that supports the development and happiness of children amid an era of technological development that continues to grow.
Since the introduction of the blackberry in 2003 and the introduction of the iphone in 2007, it can be said that smartphone technology has become the number one choice and most widely used of modern day technology integrating the abilities to make phone calls, text messaging, email, social media, high end cameras, GPS, and games. This twenty-first century “swiss army knife” has provided people with many tools that people use on a daily basis keeping people of all ages locked in to their screens without the need to look up or engage in face-to-face communication because it can all be done with a smartphone. Although there are benefits to the use of the devices, it does appear the human interaction is decreasing, especially among children and adolescence that have these devices, in that this writer will present to his readers whether this is benefiting or hindering family interaction.

Information communication technologies and the family: friend or foe? Reenee Singh It's impossible to go through the day without reading of how teenager and children's 'addiction' to iPads, mobile phones and game consoles betokens the end of civilization or seeing reports of some new outrage committed on Facebook, YouTube or Twitter. These new social media are also increasingly the subject of serious study and scrutiny by mental health professionals. They are associated with a myriad social, family and relationship problems, such as constraining communication in families, an increase in paeodophilia (Woods, 2013), cyberbullying, school refusal and online affairs. This issue of the Journal of Family Therapy focuses on the controversial subject of social media or, to use the preferred terminology of Bacigaulpe et al., the authors of the leading article in this issue, 'information communication technologies' (ICT), designated herein as 'technologies that enable virtualization-e-mail, social networks, videogames and mobile phones' (p. 339) The articles in this issue and its accompanying podcast (http://youtu.be/tAaxMHlOtcg) provide us with three compelling, interrelated reasons why it is time that we, as systemic family therapists, turn our attention to these new, mediated forms of relational life with curiosity and respect. Firstly, as systemic psychotherapists we are keenly interested in the contexts in which our clients live and virtual worlds are increasingly becoming one of their most important contexts. For example, online video-gaming enables millions of young people to develop friendships with others around the world and, just as we can engage with a migrant client's extended family through the use of ICT, we need at least a passing knowledge of ICT to engage with young people's real and virtual relationships. Secondly, a key principle of systemic practice is curiosity. Curiosity and a non-blaming stance can bs_bs_banner

A great deal of previous research has examined the profound influence of digital communications technology (e.g., texting, videoconferencing, social media usage) on family life. However, few inquiries have explored the contours of technologically assisted communication using qualitative data collected from various family members. Our study breaks new ground by using interview data collected from a split sample of parents and their emerging adult children (interviewed separately) to investigate intergenerational accounts of technologically assisted family communication. Using insights from various theoretical perspectives, we analyze thirty in-depth interviews with middle-aged parents (ages 39-62) and their corresponding emerging adult children (ages 18-29) who use technology as a significant means of communicating with one another. Our analyses reveal two overarching patterns. Discordant accounts reflect disparate intergenerational views of technologically assisted family communication. By contrast, concordant accounts provide evidence of shared intergenerational reflections on technology's role in family life. These patterns are explained by family life complexities, technology use experiences, and intergenerational norms of communication. Our study confirms that communication technology plays a multifarious role in family life across generational lines. Implications of these findings and promising avenues for future research are discussed.

The advances and incorporation of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in everyday family life has earned a place of prominence in the research field. This paper provides a research synthesis of the literature published between 1998 and 2013 examining the relationship of ICTs and family functioning. Searching through databases, 45 papers were located and analyzed which enabled the conceptualization of this relationship in five domains: (1) attitudes toward ICTs, (2) types of ICTs and using patterns, (3) family cohesion, (4) family roles, rules and intergenerational conflicts, and (5) family boundaries. Results show that ICTs have implied qualitative changes in family functioning, creating new interaction scenarios and rearranging current family relational patterns. Some gaps in the literature are pointed out, such as the difference operationalization of variables and the use of non-standard instruments in the studies. Suggestions are made for clinical interventions and future research in this domain.
