Research Questions: Primary Problem:  What are the effects of technology to the communication process within families? Specific Problem:  How does technology affects the communication process within families?  What is the role of technology in communication process within families?  What are the disadvantages of technology to the communication process? Introduction Move 1: Technology in today's world offers a lot of ways to communicate effectively so that every member of a family can keep in touch. From text messaging, Skype, Webcams, Facebook, Twitter and Emails, the facilitation of communication has never been more available. However, there are times when the one-on-one communication between human beings falls through the cracks and technology can take control over a family. There is no doubt about the way we communicate with our family members today has changed dramatically in recent years. Just a decade ago, text messaging, blogging, and emails were not methods of family communication. Today, they are widely used by families around the world. For example, parents use text messages to remind children of their curfews. Children send emails to their parents to give them their Christmas lists. College students use Web cameras to say good night to their family member who live hundreds of miles away. These are just a few of the many ways in which technology has changed the way families communicate with one another in today's modern world. Some people say that technology is impacting families in a negative way. For example, instead of playing games or eating dinner together, more and more families are instead turning on the television, using the computer, and constantly text messaging on their phones. Some people believe that families are ditching the real world in favor of the cyber world. Other people argue that technology is essential to good family communication in today's society. As parents and children have different agendas and interests, the widespread use of cell phones and the Internet help them stay in touch and communicate regularly. (http://familytech.com/how-technology-affects-family-dynamics/) The development of technology has considerably improved our lifestyle. It has made its impact felt on each and every aspect of life, including communication techniques. The development of communication has seen a huge progress. Each century has seen a new addition to the ever-growing list of means of communication. The invention of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell in the year 1875 was the first technological invention that impacted communication in humans to a massive extent. Other subsequent inventions like that of the Internet, cell phone, etc., further eased and changed the world of communication. (https://techspirited.com/impact-of-technology-on-communication) With the improved technologies for communication, such as texting, calling, video chat/Skype, and social media, it would seem that technology is improving communications within families. Of course, technology has its benefits for communicating with family members, like being able to check up on or contact parents and children in the case of an emergency. Another benefit of technology is contacting family members overseas, and adult children gone away to college or university. What about the affect technology is having on family members within the household: are family members really communicating better as they text message each other from one room in the house to another. Another study shows that the majority of people, when asked which type of technology they used the most between, a mobile phone, an IPad/tablet, a desktop/laptop, a television, a video game system, or all of the above, it seems that most use all of the above. Following the television, video game systems, desktops/laptops, and IPads/tablets right behind, leaving only using a mobile phone as the least used technology device. This shows that families tend to use several technology devices, more than just one. Even though less people use only mobile phones, everyone surveyed did own one, along with the majority of their family members. (https://prezi.com/_lodfyfaxhjc/the-impact-of-technology-on-families/) Most of the times technology is being used between family communication. According to Eysenbach (2015) stated that, Family communication is a mutual process in which family members create, share, and regulate meaning. Advancement and proliferation of information and communication technologies (ICTs) continues to change methods of communication within families. However, family communication through both verbal and nonverbal interactions plays a central role in maintaining family relationships and enhancing family well-being. It provides the foundation for family members (individuals who are related through biological, marital, cohabitation, and/or emotional bonding) to share meaning, to be connected, to be flexible in changing family rules, to achieve satisfaction, and to express and share attitudes, values, and beliefs. This includes the content (both verbal and nonverbal), frequency, and nature of family interactions, which defines the family and constructs family relationships. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4642799/) Technology speeds up the communication between people. Technology provides convenience to use more than one method of communication. Now people can use email, social media, chat messengers, video conferencing, video calls, images, videos, symbols, diagrams, charts and emoticons etc. for the communication. But technology has also impacted us positively and negatively in our daily life communication. Before the evolution of technology, humans were more focused on their goals, we were more productive due to lack of distractions, we were composed to be of creative nature due to lack of luxury of information, life was slow, the competition was small due to lack of communication gap among people and business. The communication was not so fast and destructive and it was not viral. The advancements in technology have made a strong impact on almost all areas of our society. It is making a serious difference in the way kids and parents perceive the world and each other. Even when one can highlight how the reach of technology is breaking barriers between parents and kids, the other side of technology is almost creating a family divide. Most of the technologies we use today have changed from the perspective of just a ‘want’ to a ‘necessity’ in one’s life. In addition, the negative results of today’s technology leads to poor communication within families. (https://www.edsys.in/effect-of-technology-family-time-positive-negative/) According to Taylor (2013), this divide has grown due to the increased use of technology among children in several ways. First, children’s absorption in technology, from texting to playing video games, does by their very nature limit their availability to communicate with their parents. One study found that when the working parent arrived home after work, his or her children were so immersed in technology that the parent was greeted only 30 percent of the time and was totally ignored 50 percent of the time. Another study reported that family time was not affected when technology was used for school, but did hurt family communications when used for social reasons. Interestingly, children who spent considerable time on a popular social networking site indicated that they felt less supported by their parents. There is little doubt that technology is affecting family relationships on a day-to-day level. Children are instant messaging constantly, checking their social media, listening to music, surfing their favorite web sites, and watching television or movies. Because of the emergence of mobile technology, these practices are no longer limited to the home, but rather can occur in cars, at restaurants, in fact, anywhere there’s a mobile phone signal. There was a time, as a parent, that connecting or building a relationship with your child was as simple as talking to playing with them. While those values still carry weight, the way we communicate with our children has changed thanks to modern technology. As children get older, they become more inundated in the technology surrounding them. This complicates relationship building on a surface level as it appears children have better relationships with their smartphones than they do with their own parents. Parents feel shut out, when they should feel empowered because the technology holding their children’s attention is the same technology parents can use to better connect. Parents tend to get stuck in the disconnect between themselves and current technology. Relationship building is all about communication and shared interests, so that means parents will have to actually sit down and learn how to use Snapchat. The realization is that building communication and trust with children is no longer just an evening conversation on the couch, it’s a continuous cooperative effort using all available mediums. (Family Guest, 2016) The study aimed to conduct a survey to know the positive and negative effects of technology to the one on one communication within families. The researchers will survey randomly selected students of Saint Augustine School Senior High School Campus to gather information. In Addition, the researchers will focus to know the efficacy of Technology to the communication process of family relationship. Furthermore, the researchers will conduct the survey inside the Saint Augustine School-Senior High Campus. Nowadays, students use technology as an essential tool for everything, including in communicating to their families. According to Leonard (2018), Technology has made it easy to keep extended communication logs. Emails and texts are easily tracked to confirm what was discussed in previous correspondence. Even phone conversations can be recorded and logged in digital formats through customer retention management software. Whether to quickly review what was discussed or to keep a legal record of correspondence, technology has made logging communications much easier. Everything has a positive and negative impact, and the impact of technology on the communication process also comes as a mixed bag. In this research, we will discuss the effects of technology. Mobiles and the Internet are literally basic necessities these days. A majority of us would feel something missing in life, if there were no mobiles or Internet. (https://techspirited.com/impact-of-technology-on-communication) Move 2: The advancements in technology have made a strong impact on almost all areas of our society. The technology has moved forward from simple computer gaming, SMS, chatting or emails to assignment completion tools and video calling. Parenting in digital age has now become more challenging than ever before. According to the study (Pew Internet and American Life Project, 2008, p.20), "Today's married couples use a variety of tools-landline phones, cell phones, instant messaging, and email-to manage their schedules and stay connected with each other throughout the day. The adoption of cell phones is a particularly important component of the way today's families stay in touch and coordinate their lives together. Couples communicate frequently just to say hello and chat (28 percent of couples do this several times a day, and an additional 36 percent do so at least once a day) and also to coordinate daily schedules (20 percent do this several times a day, and 39 percent do so at least once a day). However, many also communicate regularly for weightier reasons: discussing important matters and planning future events." New technologies, especially those that utilize the Internet, create many new opportunities for communicating with family and friends. The Internet also offers many new avenues for social interaction through social networking sites, online support groups, and chat rooms. Many families find email and chat rooms useful for keeping in touch with family members who live far away or even for keeping better tabs on those who live nearby. But can technology replace face-to-face time? Most experts say no. When it comes to communicating feelings and attitudes, human beings use more than just words. They also use physical gestures, tone of voice, and body language to express themselves (Fitzpatrick, 2008). These are all important elements of communication. Therefore, some people argue that, if you do not regularly communicate face-to-face with family members, you may miss important signs that they are sad, frustrated, or depressed. Still, others argue that technology does not replace face-to-face interaction. Rather, it complements it. In response to concerns that technology isolates and pulls people apart, the Pew study (2008) found the opposite. It revealed "that couples use their phones to connect and coordinate their lives, especially if they have children at home (p. 14). American spouses often go their separate ways during the day but remain connected by cell phones and to some extent by Internet communications. When they return home, they often have shared moments of exploration and entertainment on the Internet." For families that live far away from one another, technology helps them connect. Many families live far apart and do not see each other on a regular basis. Even when families live under the same roof, it can be challenging to find the time to eat dinner together or sit down to chat. Today's technologies make it easy to communicate, some people believe that they create interruptions to family time and make it easy to avoid face-to-face time. Communication is extremely important between family members, especially when some of them live far away. For this reason, today's technological advances are very helpful to families with busy schedules or widely spread families. Throughout history, innovation has sparked societal changes and has changed the dynamics of families for years (Holson, 2008). Telephones created a private and easy way for children to communicate with others. Automobiles created a way for children to go on dates far from watchful chaperones. And the computer, along with the Internet, allows children to live virtual lives separate from their parents and other family members. Experts believe that mobile devices will further accelerate these trends (Holson, 2008). By 2010, 81 percent of Americans between the ages of 5 to 24 will own a cellphone, up from 53 percent in 2005, according to IDC, a research company that tracks technology and consumer research. For this reason, companies are now marketing mobile devices to very young audiences. Firefly Mobile introduced the glow Phone for preschool children, which has a small keypad with two speed-dial buttons depicting an image of a mother and a father. For many parents, having the ability to reach their children whenever they want is a benefit that outweighs the negative aspects of the mobile technology trends (Holson, 2008). Many parents live in different cities or states than they children do, for reasons such as divorce or kids going off to college. Such parents are especially grateful to have a way to reach their children, anytime, anywhere. And most children feel the same way. In an article, Ben Blanton, a college student, said that he enjoys the ability to text his parents when it suits him (Holson, 2008). "Texting is in between calling and sending an e-mail," he said. Due to text messaging, he does not need to worry about writing letters. "It's too time consuming," he said. "You have to go to the post office. Instead, I can sit and watch television and send a text, which is the same thing." A study by the Harvard Research Project (Bouffard, 2008) revealed that technology positively impacts families because it promotes more meaningful and frequent communication between families and schools. According to researchers, many families and teachers now use email and websites to communicate. According to the report (Bouffard, 2008): "Internet-based communication methods, including email, websites, and newer social networking technologies such as blogs, present new opportunities for family-school communication. These technologies may reduce scheduling barriers that pose challenges to traditional forms of family-school communication, can convey information to multiple families at once, and can efficiently share and archive information about student progress, school policies and assignments, tips for family involvement, and other topics." However, the report cautions that this new type of communication presents new challenges to families and schools, as well. "Websites and email contact can be difficult for schools to maintain, may intimidate some families, and lack visual and nonverbal cues (e.g., tone of voice or body language)," according to the report (Bouffard, 2008). "Most significantly, many families do not have access to Internet technology." The study's findings suggest that technology offers many new opportunities for promoting family-school communication. It is especially beneficial during adolescence, a time when family involvement tends to decline. The Internet in particular may represent an opportunity to maintain or even increase communication between schools and families of adolescents. Move 3: The study aims to prove the efficacy of technology towards family communication. The researchers will conduct this research to know the perspective of all students within this topic. How technology can be involved towards communication processes within your children are is only half of the equation in its impact on them. The other half, of course, is the degree to which you are savvy in both your understanding and use of technology. The research indicating that children spend, on average, more than 7.5 hours a day in front of a screen (not including school and homework gives a persuasive sense of the typical young person’s relationship with technology. Your children may not be average; they may be more or less involved with technology. Insights into the relationship that you and your children currently have with technology acts as a starting point from which you can use the information in my new book, Raising Generation Tech, to help you ensure that technology is a positive and healthy force in their lives. Dr. Taylor (2012) The advancement of technology is causing a negative impact on families due to lack of verbal communications within families, such as “quality” family time spent together and the uses of technology. This study tried to assume the following questions: What are the effects of technology to the communication process within families?; How does technology affects the communication process within families?; What is the role of technology in communication process within families?; What are the disadvantages of technology to the communication process? HYPOTHESIS Specific Hypothesis: H0: Technology does not affect the communication process within families. H1: Technology does affect the communication process within families. General Hypothesis: H0: Technology has positive effects to the communication process within families H1: Technology has negative effects to the communication process within families. H0: The role of technology is to not improve the communication process within families. H1: The role of technology is to improve the communication process within families. H0: Technology strengthens face-to-face communication process within families. H1: Technology weakens face-to-face communication process within families. The researcher needs to conduct this research to know the advantages and disadvantages of technology that can highly affect the student’s one on one communication process within their families. Students use technology as an essential tool for learning. This includes online learning, such as homework, quizzes, projects, etc. If a school's library is outdated or lacking in a selection of titles, a student might find it difficult to compile the necessary research for an essay or research paper. As long as the school has a computer lab, students are able to use the Internet and digital encyclopedias to obtain the research they need. While students should be wary of the legitimacy of some of the content they read online, many schools use software like the Encyclopedia Britannica to help students do research. When schools in different parts of the state, country or world connect, students can "meet" their counterparts through video conferencing without leaving the classroom. Some sites, such as Glovico, are used to help students learn foreign languages online by pairing a group of students with a teacher from another country. (McCoy, 2018) The purpose of this study for the researcher is to know the Perspective of Senior High Students to the Effects of Technology to the Communication Process within Families. The researcher will be conducted their research in Saint Augustine School-Tanza. In this research, the researcher needs a lot of information towards the Senior High School students of Saint Augustine School to know what are the positive and negative of effects technology which can affect the communication process towards their families. The researcher will be easy to conduct their research because many of the students now, know how to use technologies so that the researcher will be conducting more information about this topic. Nowadays, almost everyone uses technology as a tool of communication because some parts of a family are going far away to work in another country by using technology they will be connected to each other even if they were apart. The researcher uses Technology as a medium of communication because families can be connected to each other, including the students. By using technology, students may learn a lot and improve their knowledge about the factors that can affect their communication within their families and also to make a new learning from all the students so that the researchers will have a new understanding on how they use the technology in a right way. Students can also easily access and share any information about their homework, exam, and other activities in school, because they are easy to communicate to each other by using technology which can help them to know what are the activities from school that needs to do so that it will, may the way of students to do their academic and communication with the help of Technology. The study will benefit those people who are using technology and the families who are influenced and affected by technology. This will also support the other research and will know the benefit of the technology as an instrument of communication. Lastly, the other researchers can use this as reference and for conducting the other related studies.
