We present Chandra X-ray point source catalogs for 9 Hickson Compact Groups (HCGs, 37 galaxies) at distances 34 − 89 Mpc. We perform detailed X-ray point source detection and photometry, and interpret the point source population by means of simulated hardness ratios. We thus estimate Xray luminosities (L X ) for all sources, most of which are too weak for reliable spectral fitting. For all sources, we provide catalogs with counts, count rates, power-law indices (Γ), hardness ratios, and L X , in the full (0.5 − 8.0 keV), soft (0.5 − 2.0 keV) and hard (2.0 − 8.0 keV) bands. We use optical emission-line ratios from the literature to re-classify 24 galaxies as star-forming, accreting onto a supermassive black hole (AGNs), transition objects, or low-ionization nuclear emission regions (LINERs). Two-thirds of our galaxies have nuclear X-ray sources with Swift/UVOT counterparts. Two nuclei have L X,0.5−8.0keV > 10 42 erg s −1 , are strong multi-wavelength AGNs and follow the known α OX -νL ν (nearUV) correlation for strong AGNs. Otherwise, most nuclei are X-ray faint, consistent with either a low-luminosity AGN or a nuclear X-ray binary population, and fall in the "non-AGN locus" in α OX -νL ν (nearUV) space, which also hosts other, normal, galaxies. Our results suggest that HCG X-ray nuclei in high specific star formation rate spiral galaxies are likely dominated by star formation, while those with low specific star formation rates in earlier types likely harbor a weak AGN. The AGN fraction in HCG galaxies with M R ≤ −20 and L X,0.5−8.0keV ≥ 10 41 erg s −1 is 0.08 +0.35 −0.01 , somewhat higher than the ∼ 5% fraction in galaxy clusters.

What if we started to question the unquestionable? Could we ever get a glimpse at what is hidden behind the veil of Maya? By questioning a number of criteria that have traditionally been used to systematise the ‘Minoan’ Linear A script of Bronze Age Crete so as to make it (to an extent) intelligible to us, this talk proposes to re-evaluate some of the basic assumptions that have so far underpinned our interpretation of Linear A and to offer an alternative way of looking at this script from a more nuanced perspective. To this end, a two-fold approach will be followed. First, Linear A will be investigated at a structural level, to flag up the pitfalls of the current sign classification and pinpoint alternative taxonomic models. Second, a comprehensive palaeographic investigation of Linear A administrative documents, taken as a case study, will be carried out to disentangle some of this script’s graphic complexities, then compared with evidence from its offshoot ‘Mycenaean’ Linear B. The integrated results of this investigation will no doubt make us rethink the way in which we look at Linear A and wonder whether this way is still a productive one. It will then be shown how digital approaches will play a key role in taking this research a step further, allowing us to re-systematise the evidence at our disposal by setting different and customisable parameters. In the digital era, it is now hoped that also Linear A research will soon benefit from the application of computational techniques to its kaleidoscopic dataset.

Short information on computational materials science is given, with the methodology of material properties fields, in composition and process coordinates, as the part of it and as the background of the study presented in this paper. One of the main means of the methodology is random scanning the whole and local fields. These tools were developed and used to solve many problems in materials science related to the properties defined by mutually independent factors. The purpose of the study presented in this paper has been to develop the tool for random scanning the fields of properties effected by "mixtures" of q components, linearly related portions of components in rangers from 0 to 1, with their sum equal to 1. In these cases, the factors domain (or subregion of it) presents the simplex. The special designs of experiments to get reduced polynomials describing the fields in simplex coordinates are used. Two procedures for generating any number of uniformly distributed points on the simplex have been developed. These points define the virtual mixtures simulated in computational experiments. The procedures were tested by scanning the fields of two rheological characteristics of lime suspension filled with "short", "medium", and "long" cellulose fibers. Experimental-statistical models in the form of reduced polynomials for effective viscosity at shear rate equal to1 s-1 and for the rate of destruction of liquid structure (parameters of power-law model of flow, K = η 1 and m) obtained in previous study are used to determine the levels of these characteristic for each of simulated mixture. Computational experiments were carried out, in which the fields of η 1 and m in whole simplex domain and in some of its zones were scanned, allowing the generalizing indices of the fields and different correlations between η 1 and m in different zones of mixture triangle to be estimated. The developed tools, the procedures of generating random points, which would define the simulated compositions of the "mixtures", make significant contribution to the progress of the methodology of recipe-technological fields of properties and to computational materials science.
