Steward Business Review, 2014
The future of a country is dependent to a very great extent on its leadership. An insight into the history reveals that empires have been built and disintegrated due to effective and weak leadership respectively (Rao, 1991). In the context of India, it is found that leadership is a very popular issue in this country and it is discussed often among people of different sections of the Indian society (Chhokar et al., 2008). Be it the political leaders, military leaders, or leaders in their respective careers; leadership has always attracted the Indian masses to throw their reactions. India has been the birthplace of many great leaders who established themselves as the global examples of leadership. This paper discusses a few such examples of great leaders in the history of India and identifies their specific traits or leadership styles which led them build great dynasties. In particular, the paper sheds light on the different leadership styles of the leaders of Mauryan and Maratha empires, and identifies the general characteristics of a good leader.

This paper considers what valuable leadership lessons can be learnt from Gandhi that may prove useful not only at the national and global levels but at the corporate and other organisational levels as well. A broad review of management research on leadership shows that we do not have at our disposal a unified theory of leadership with which we can make full sense of his contribution. It is argued that precisely the absence of such a theory should encourage us to draw lessons from varied backgrounds. Gandhi’s role gives credence to some of the most innovative management ideas on leadership. These ideas can only become richer if the full range of Gandhi’s achievements can be adequately comprehended. We need to pay attention in this respect to Gandhi’s vision inspired strategy.

south Asia, home to nearly 2 billion people, has a rich history of political fragmentation. scholars have debated in various ways how south Asia's apparently common culture and geographical proximity can promote socioeconomic gains, but there is no certainty about how to achieve this. Built on a journey of learning and sharing about the Pakistan Movement for 40 years, sikandar Hayat, a Distinguished Professor of History and Public Policy, provides a platform for close introspection of the past to learn lessons for the future. Historiographies of south Asia must be used to build consciousness for future solidarity and to develop pathways for stability, as the study of history and sociology of development are inseparable. it is both a strength and limitation of this book that it focuses on six Muslim separatist leaders who were 'prominent, influential, and decisive' (p. 18) forerunners in creating Pakistan. Few past works have focused specifically on the function, impact and individual and collective role of leadership in this regard. The book mainly traces events and developments from 1857 to 1947, but also provides some background context on Muslims in the subcontinent from 711 to 1857. Hayat especially highlights the sacrifices and devotion of these eminent leaders, showing how they struggled for unity, but in the end believed that separatism would lead to more sustained progress in the region. indirectly, this book strongly asks south Asians to consider which aspects bind them or not, irrespective of boundaries and differences. Chapter 1 highlights the 'conscious and careful efforts of the Muslim rulers' (p. 24) to maintain solidarity in the indian subcontinent prior to British rule. examples discussed include the early coexistence of sultanates with Hindu rulers (p. 25), allocation of civil, military and government responsibilities to Hindus during the rule of Muhammad bin Qasim, Mahmud of Ghazni and islam shah (p. 26), the absorption of Persian and Arabic in northern indian languages (p. 26) and the inclusion of Hindus as top officials and the abolition of jizya (poll) tax during Mughal emperor Akbar's rule (p. 27). However, peaceful coexistence did not last. Revolt and uprising against the Mughal rule, across south india by Marathas and in North india by Jats, Rajputs and sikhs, led to the battles of Panipat and Balakot, and also extremist demands that Muslims must either leave india or convert to Aryanism (p. 39). opportunities for reassembling common ground were weakened by the advent of the soUTH AsiA ReseARCH

In the words of the famous Scottish novelist and playwright J.M. Barrie, “I’m youth, I’m joy, I’m a little bird that has broken out of the egg”. When a little bird comes out of the egg, there stands a whole new and beautiful world in front of that tiny creature and this new world fills the heart of the bird with new aspirations and hopes to soar high in the sky. Similar is the case of the young people as during this period they have before them new vistas of knowledge and their hearts are filled with new aspirations to achieve big. Youth is often termed as the ‘spring of life’ as this is the time of freshness and flowering in life of a person. It is the time of fearless experimentation and dreaming of making impossibilities possible. The youth have the strength to work towards bigger cause. They are the future of a country and can play a great role in moulding the destiny of a nation. Late former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam had tremendous faith in the power of youth in constructing the future of a country. He believed that young minds have superfluous possibilities and potentials that if equipped with knowledge and creativity can work wonders for a country. This paper throws light on Dr. Kalam’s views on the role of the youth in making India a developed country as stated in his book Ignited Minds.
