The opportunities for social science research change with developments in policy and social science, conservation biology, and ecological theory; population dynamics, quantitative methods, laws and current management or governance practices; industry operating procedures, social values, institutional change, and funding. This paper identifies opportunities for future social science research, and economics in particular, due to developments in economic theory and the shifting concerns of society.
Aquatic Living Resources, 1995
Historically, nation-state level fisheries management has rclied primarily on the disciplines of biology, ecology, and to some extent econornicsusually in somc combination, and with varying degrees of emphasis and success. Recently, as an increasing number of fisheries have begun to experience severe declines there has been increased intcrcst in how social scientists might help to address some of these problems. In managing fishcries, it is humans who must be understood and managed. Furthermore, some managers havc bcgun to question the view of biological conservation as the primary goal of management, sceing economic and social goals as equally important. Social science studies of fisheries indicate that not al1 membcrs of a given user group operate in the same way, or have the same impact on marine ccosystcms. People's behavior is often influenced by family, community, and other sociocultural variables in addition to economic and ecological considerations. Using the perspectives and methodologies derived froin disciplines such as anthropology and sociology, fisheries managers should be ablc to develop policies which integrate and balance economic, social and biological objectives. Management systems which are more compatible with broad user group values should result in higher coinpliance and reduced enforcement costs. An overview of recent social science research pcrtaining to fisheries management is discussed, and examples presented on the relevance of social science information in crafting successful management regimes. Keywurds: Sociocultural variables, management regimes, anthropology and sociology, fisheries management, user group, enforcement costs.
Review of Policy Research, 2020
As much as environmental problems manifest themselves as problems with the natural environment, environmental problems-and their solutions-are ultimately social and behavioral in nature. Just as the natural sciences provide a basis for understanding the need for environmental policy and informing its design, the social sciences also contribute in significant ways to the understanding of the behavioral sources of environmental problems, both in terms of individual incentives and collective action challenges. In addition, the social sciences have contributed much to the understanding of the ways that laws and other institutions can be designed to solve environmental problems. In this paper, we distill core intellectual frameworks from among the social sciences that scaffold modern environmental policy in industrialized country contexts-focusing on key contributions principally from political science, economics, psychology, and sociology to the analysis of environmental problems and their solutions. These frameworks underlie how environmental problems are defined at multiple scales and the conceptualization and empirical testing of policy solutions that seek to shape human behavior in ways that improve environmental quality and promote sustainable economic growth. With the planet facing continued environmental threats, improving environmental policy decision making depends on the insights and frameworks of social science research in addition to those of the natural sciences.
Society & Natural Resources, 2006
This special issue of Society and Natural Resources brings the results of long-term ecological research with an explicit social dimension to the attention of the social scientific research community. Contributions are from the Baltimore Ecosystem Study LTER, the Central Arizona-Phoenix LTER, the Coweeta LTER and the Northern Temperate Lakes LTER. The range of practice represented at these four sites serves to identify commonalities and differences in the results as well as the experience of integrative research. The objective of this special issue is to extend a call to social scientists of all kinds to engage with the LTER program in long-term research and synthesis to help answer the urgent and intriguing questions of our day.

What mode of analysis might be employed, that captures the confluent action of material and social systems acting together? The framework of Social Ecology, which first emerged as a rejoinder to the Chicago School of Human Ecology of the early 1900s, evolved over subsequent decades as an attempt at such integration. We revisit social ecology's historical origins and foundational assumptions. We propose that the social ecological framework can offer useful conceptual grounding to scholars of ecological economics. We illustrate how this analytical lens affords a deeper understanding of unsustainable systems and valuation problems.
