The transformation of Ottoman Cisr-i Mustafa Paşa to Bulgarian Svilengrad was the outcome of a combination of both local violence and state-policy that took place throughout the Balkan Wars (1912-13) and within the framework of state-building efforts in both Ottoman imperial and Bulgarian post-imperial contexts. This sequence of mass violence stands at the core of this article. Based on Ottoman, Jewish, international, and translated Bulgarian sources, this article discusses the everyday dynamics and events that took place in the town by placing them in the contexts of the macro-historical transformations generated by the Balkan Wars. It likewise turns to micro-historical analysis to study the violence perpetrated by locals. While it is evident that much of the violence was state-sponsored or, at least, tacitly accepted by the state, and reflected top-down planning, non-state players also took part in the retribution against those they deemed alien to the national cause.

The article analyses the three prominent ideologues of the doctrine of “Russian world”: the myth that “Orthodoxy is the basis of an identity”; the myth of the openness and friendly attitude of the Russian people to other ethnic groups and religions, and the myth of the Eurasian/Russian civilisation that opposes the “rotten” West. The existence of these ideologues in the information and symbolic field of Ukraine and the world, manipulating them, and placing them in the actual context of the Ukrainian cultural space, lead to a distorted perception of relations between Russia and Ukraine and the war between them. The article attempts to reveal those distortions and semantic substitutions ontologically contained in the ideologies of the “Russian world”, which can be analysed as typical errors in the context of the argumentation theory. The study aims to develop a conditional “dictionary” of mythologists of the “Russian world”, which could be used during an all-out information confrontat...

Spoken languages use one set of articulators-the vocal tract, whereas signed languages use multiple articulators, including both manual and facial actions. How sensitive are the cortical circuits for language processing to the particular articulators that are observed? This question can only be addressed with participants who use both speech and a signed language. In this study, we used fMRI to compare the processing of speechreading and sign processing in deaf native signers of British Sign Language (BSL) who were also proficient speechreaders. The following questions were addressed: To what extent do these different language types rely on a common brain network? To what extent do the patterns of activation differ? How are these networks affected by the articulators that languages use? Common perisylvian regions were activated both for speechreading English words and for BSL signs. Distinctive activation was also observed reflecting the language form. Speechreading elicited greater activation in the left mid-superior temporal cortex than BSL, whereas BSL processing generated greater activation at the parieto-occipito-temporal junction in both hemispheres. We probed this distinction further within BSL, where manual signs can be accompanied by different sorts of mouth action. BSL signs with speech-like mouth actions showed greater superior temporal activation, while signs made with non-speech-like mouth actions showed more activation in posterior and inferior temporal regions. Distinct regions within the temporal cortex are not only differentially sensitive to perception of the distinctive articulators for speech and for sign, but also show sensitivity to the different articulators within the (signed) language.

Many early cinematic virtual reality projects were dominated by a "demo-aesthetic," focusing primarily on the expressive potential of the medium as opposed to an interventional purpose as an ideologically charged artwork. However, recent films by artists such as Lynette Wallworth, Chris Milk, Gabo Arora, and Felix & Paul have utilised the unique expressive and immersive properties of virtual reality to capitalise on the political and ethical capabilities of this new mode. This article seeks to examine virtual reality's potential as a medium of ethical experience, through a critical examination of Australian virtual reality artist Lynette Wallworth's Collisions (2015). Collisions tells the story of Nyarri Morgan's firsthand encounter with the effects of nuclear testing in the South Australia desert in the 1950s. As a virtual reality experience, the film utilises aspects of presence to engage the spectator in an ethical understanding of the consequences of Morgan's witnessing, and the effects of the nuclear testing in relation to the Martu people's stewardship of the land. This ethical inhabitation is assisted by the altered spatial and temporal dynamics in the experience of the virtual reality spectator.

With increasing traffic, apart from the major traffic junctions, there are few smaller junctions which witness heavy traffic only during a certain period of the day. For such cases, deploying of conventional traffic lights are not a viable option. A cost-effective internet of things (IoT) enabled portable smart traffic signaling system is designed using ESP32 dual core microcontroller, to assist traffic personnel working at small traffic junctions. It uses a foldable mechanical structure which can be carried easily. The system is designed to work with and without internet connectivity depending on its functionality and place of deployment. The system can be pre-programmed with default time value to work without human intervention. Using an android application, the user can manually control the traffic signal by analysing the traffic density. System gathers the traffic density information based on the operations performed by the traffic personnel and stores it in the cloud. In Smart ...

I have known emeritus professor Wim van Binsbergen since my twenties as a passionate intercultural philosopher. As his student-assistant at the African Studies Centre in Leiden, I made sure that this professor did not run out of library books, which he needed to consult in order to write his ever-growing pile of self-written books. I always wondered what happened with all the books that I ordered for him and so did the librarian of the African Studies Centre. On a weekly basis, he was in need of more books, but he was reluctant to return any of them. I used to joke with the librarian by saying that he had eaten all of the books I had ordered for him. Clearly, Professor Van Binsbergen needed his food for thought.

High-cycle fatigue experiments are performed on welded tubular steel X-joints, with braces and chord of equal diameter. They are scaled-down joints, used extensively in offshore wind platforms. Three different welding procedures are considered in specimen fabrication: manual, fullyautomatic and manual with HFMI post-weld treatment. Τwo possible locations for crack initiation were identified: chord "crown" and "in-between location", also verified by numerical calculations and fractography of failed specimens. Monotonic loading tests on fatigue-cracked specimens showed good performance in terms of ultimate strength and deformation capacity, despite the presence of through-thickness cracks. The results are compared with predictions from relevant design standards.
