In India the number of disabled individuals is increasing every year. Mobility aids are useful for patients for transportation and a replacement for walking especially in indoor and outdoor environment. Transferring the patients from wheelchair to stretcher or to the medical bed is always an issue for the attendant or helper. Understanding the various issues regarding the mobility equipment and introducing a better design will be an asset for the medical field and helping hand for disabled individuals. There is a need for a wheelchair cum stretcher to facilitate the disabled patient's mobility and to provide a novel medical equipment for use in the Indian hospitals. Here we are developing a system which is capable of shifting various positions (Chair, Semi-Chair and Stretcher) manually. These positions can be achieved by a lead screw connected with a hinge joint. Lead Screw translates turning motion into linear motion. Also the height of the stretcher can be adjusted using a Hydraulic jack manually. It is placed horizontally which pushes against a lever which lifts the main arm. And also there is a lid on chair which can be opened to eliminate human waste. This is a cost reducing project which helps mainly paralyzed patients to do their daily things.

The number of disabled and physically weak, handicapped persons are increasing day by day. Therefore transportation medium is required for patients. Wheelchair and stretchers are commonly used in hospitals. And this medical equipment is used for transferring patients from one place to another. And during transferring patients creates problems to patients and also creates problems for attendant and nurse. Sometimes it creates problems to patient. And transferring patient from wheelchair to stretcher, stretcher to bed, and bed to wheelchair is always issue for both hospital staff and family members of patient. This system causes stress, body pain to patients and sometimes chances to sleep down the patient. Understanding the various issues regarding the mobility equipment a better design will be an asset for medical field and helpful for disabled person. This paper presents the design and fabrication of wheelchair cum stretcher. This project is specially design for patient to transfer patient from bed to wheelchair and wheelchair to stretcher. This innovation helps medical staff to transfer patient from chair to bed very easily because chair become a stretcher and it is adjustable to height of bed. Conversion of wheelchair to stretcher and vice versa is achieved by simple linkage mechanism which is manually operated easy mechanism. Also the height of stretcher can be adjusted using hydraulic jack manually. It is placed in horizontal position. These jacks push against a lever, which lifts the main lift arm. This is a cost reducing Project which helps patients to do their daily things.

At present in world, the number of handicapped individuals is increasing each year. Their mobility has become a serious problem and it poses a great challenge before the engineering and scientific community. It demands conceptualizing and developing effective solutions in the form of mobility aids. Various mobility aids play a crucial role to empower their disabilities and bringing them back to normalcy. These tools help them in transportation and also act as a viable substitute for physical walking in indoor and outdoor environments. Out of all the equipment, the most common are stretcher and wheelchair. Wheelchair finds its usage in hospitals, railway stations, airports, shopping malls, and even in household activities. Primarily it is used in hospitals along with stretchers. Owing to its large-scale application in commercial and domestic purposes, it needs a modification in terms of flexibility and interconversion ability so that the problems which are arising in individual devices can be eliminated and particularly it will be more beneficial in medical industries. This paper presents an idea about developing such a mechanism so that we can integrate the advantages of both wheelchair and stretcher. It should be ergonomically designed and all the safety standards should be met. This paper also reviews the various areas of development made in the past about mobility aids for the comfort of both patients and hospital staff.

This study will illustrates the new fully comfortable design for physically handicapped person comparative to available designs in general use. The objective of this study is to design the convertible wheelchair to stretcher easily by means of design software and obtain the idea in actual practice.

The problem of transferring the patients exists from ancient times. People who get seriously injured or ill were carried by others by means of wooden stretcher with cloth or leather tied to it. Afterwards they were carried on wheels which reduced the effort of the people carrying the patients.
