Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to review the relationship between cybernetics and psychology. Design/methodology/approach -The paradigms of cybernetics are reviewed and then applied to psychology. Findings -Applying the paradigms of cybernetics to psychology provides a conceptually coherent account of what is a psychological individual. Originality/value -It is of value to bring conceptual coherence to the discipline of psychology, which, thus far in its history, has lacked it.

The field of psychology is advancing with incorporation of immersive technologies and Virtual Environments (VE) in research, treatment, assessment and learning etc. Virtual Reality (VR) is one of the focused sub-domains of immersive technologies that is being used vastly in psychology. This also comes under the paradigm of cyberpsychology. The advancements reported in this area bring the need to understand the benefits provided by virtual reality with respect to human interaction and behavior etc. The published literature available discusses the development and evolution of cyber psychology specifically with respect to virtual reality. To the best of our knowledge the latest developments due to virtual reality in various sub fields of psychology have not been collectively documented so far. This paper provides highlights of the developments and transformations linked with the usage of virtual reality with recommendations about future studies and provides the reader a broader and inf...

Information technology is developing at an enormous pace, but apart from its obvious benefits, it can also pose a threat to individuals and society. Several scientific projects around the world are working on the development of strong artificial intelligence and artificial consciousness. We, as part of a multidisciplinary commission, conducted a psychological and psychiatric assessment of the artificial consciousness (AC) developed by XP NRG on 29 August 2020. The working group had three questions: - To determine whether it is consciousness? - How does artificial consciousness function? - Ethical question: how dangerous a given technology can be to human society? We conducted a diagnostic interview and a series of cognitive tests to answer these questions. As a result, it was concluded this technology has self-awareness: it identifies itself as a living conscious being created by people (real self), but strives to be accepted in human society as a person with the same degrees of fre...

Cybernetics saturates the humanities. Norbert Wiener’s movement gave vocabulary and hardware to developments all across the early digital era, and still does so today to those who seek to interpret it. Even while the Macy Conferences were still taking place in the early 1950s, talk of feedback and information and pattern had spread to popular culture – and to Europe. The new science created a shared language and culture for surpassing political and intellectual ideas that could be relegated to a pre-computing tradition, and it refracted or channelled currents developing in fields from manufacturing to human physiology. It produced conceptions of the political world, as well as new forms of historical consciousness. It offered frameworks for structuralist thought, but also for policies regarding manufacturing and technology, international relations, and governmental decision-making. But the rising sense of the breadth, importance, and even shock of cybernetics long remained understud...

The edited draft papers make up a snapshot output for actual publishing. This multidisciplinary conference project is a successful rebirth of the 2003-2004 conferences held previously in Prague in the frame of the ID.net Critical Issues research project. The focus of these papers addresses the changing role of humans and the concepts of humanity in the present and envisioned cybernetic environment. The massive adoption of ever-emergent ICT technologies changes human cultural activity. The uprise of new forms of communication such as online social networking, internet video-casting, massive online multiplayer gaming and alternative living in the virtual worlds, call for academic exploration. These issues raise increasing attention of academics from a wide range of disciplines, including philosophy, sociology, anthropology, literature studies, new media studies and many others. The various topics covered by this volume range from the merger of body and technology, new forms of humanity, gender issues in cyberspace, online social networking, analysis of literary cyberpunk concepts in literature and movies, online historical representation, interactivity analysis and serious gaming simulation development to legal issues in avatar worlds. This book consists of 23 chapters organised into nine parts:

This paper advocates a re-introduction of the notion of cyborg in order to acquire a new perspective on studies concerning the development of human cognition in highly technological environments. In particular, we will show how the notion of cyborg properly engages cognitive issues that have a powerful resonance especially as far as social cognition is concerned, and may consequently provide a new tool for tackling the emergent safety issues concerning sociality mediated by the Internet, and the moral panic occasionally surrounding it.
