The study was done to find out the methods for dispensing the dental amalgam and its disposal in three dental teaching hospitals of Peshawar according to American Dental Association (ADA) Standard and International Standard Organization Standard (ISO). A specially designed questionnaire was sent for this study. The results showed that none of the dental teaching hospital in Peshawar follows the ADA and ISO standard for the disposal and recycling the amalgam waste. Only 9 % claimed using the chair side traps and install amalgam separator at chair side, 64% used the hand mixing alloy/mercury procedure. Number of amalgam fillings done and removed by three dental hospitals per month were 2027 and 267 respectively. It was concluded that total amalgam waste was 3.204 kg in three dental hospitals in one year, and proper measures should be taken for the dispensing and disposal of amalgam.

To assess amalgam use and waste management protocols practised by Pakistani dentists, a crosssectional study was made of 239 dentists in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, recruited by convenience and cluster sampling. Amalgam was the most frequently used restorative material, with the choice dictated by patients' financial constraints. While 90.4% of dentists perceived amalgam as a health risk, only 46.4% considered it an environmental hazard. The majority disposed of amalgam waste in the trash, down the sink or as hospital waste. Very few (5.9%) had an amalgam separator installed in their dental office. Amalgam waste management protocols and mercury recycling should be introduced in Pakistan.

Background: Amalgam has been the gold standard for restorations in posterior teeth. Mercury, a major component of dental amalgam, is considered an environmental pollutant. The Minamata Convention on mercury dictates the reduction in the use of mercury-containing products. Since Pakistan is a signatory to the convention, the same amalgam phase-out limitations are implemented in Pakistan. Aim: To identify and assess the use of amalgam and its waste management by dentists in Pakistan post-Minamata Convention guidelines. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Lahore among 520 general dental practitioners in 2019. Results: The sample size for the study was calculated as 500; the questionnaire was distributed among 550 dentists. Dental amalgam was used by only 41.6% of the dentists in their practice; 55.0% perceived it to be a health risk. Most of the dentists (76.3%) were unaware of the proper disposal protocols for dental amalgam and 76.5% were unaware of any guidelines regar...

Dental amalgam has been extensively used as a tooth filling material for many decades and has beyond doubt saved millions of teeth that otherwise would have needed to be extracted. The release of amalgam particles into dental office wastewater is a matter of particular concern as amalgam particles could then be discharged into the environment. Amalgam waste discharges contribute to mercury in the environment through direct wastewater discharge, incineration, land-filling and sewage sludge incineration, although the discharge from dentistry is probably responsible for less than 1% of the total mercury discharged annually into the environment as a result of human activities. Nevertheless, dentists, by being producers of amalgam waste, have a responsibility and a duty of care for the proper management of this waste within their practices. Appropriate measures should be taken to minimise the amount of waste where possible or take action to ensure that all generated waste is disposed of ...

Background: Dental amalgam has been the subject of several studies mainly on the emission of mercury vapor during its handling. The World Health Organization considers that the inhalation of mercury vapor can have adverse effects on the digestive, nervous, immune, pulmonary and renal levels. The aim of this study was to evaluate current practices in the management of dental amalgam waste produced at the level of dental practices in the cities of Rabat and Kenitra in Morocco. Methods: A questionnaire has been established to assess the situation of mercury waste management in dental practices and to make these physicians aware of the importance of this management. This study was conducted for a period of three months from April 15 through July 15, 2017. Results: Of the 172 questionnaires submitted to the dentists, 50 completed and usable questionnaires were retrieved. The response rate was 29%. The survey revealed that 68% (17) stated that their dental chair was not equipped with an a...
