A Namuyi person falls accidentally and is panicked. The soul leaves the body and the person becomes lethargic. It is nearly always the patient's mother who calls the soul back, if she knows the correct chant. Five thousand Namuyi Tibetans live mostly in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, PR China with Han and Nuosu (Yi). The ritual is commonly done for children less than ten years of age, though anyone may lose their soul. The chant is presented along with a brief discussion of Namuyi cosmology and beliefs concerning the soul.
ʂa ⁵⁴ da ⁵⁴ (b. 1939) is a Namuyi p h a ⁵⁴ tsə ⁵⁴-a traditional Namuyi religious practitioner/ specialist-who chants and conducts religious rituals. He lives and practices in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China. This article introduces p h a ⁵⁴ tsə ⁵⁴ ʂa ⁵⁴ da ⁵⁴ and the many hours of his oral materials recorded by Libu Lakhi in 2009 that are archived at http://tinyurl.com/lgf3row. In addition, aspects of Namuyi religion are described, including terms of mountain deities, ill omens and taboos, the p h a ⁵⁴ tsə ⁵⁴ , ʂa ⁵⁴ da ⁵⁴ , chants, and a personal account of a ritual done in Dashui Village, Minsheng Township, Xichang City, Sichuan Province in March 2013. An appendix, seven photographs, and a diagram provide additional detail.

his remarkable book is the product of a fruitful collaboration among a native speaker of na53 mʑi53 kha11 tho11, Tibetan and Chinese consultants, and a dedicated group of Westerners resident in China. It affords the reader an intimate glimpse into traditional na53 mʑi53 life, now well on its way to disappearing along with hundreds of similar minority cultures in the world.
The Namuyi live in southern Sichuan Province, the People's Republic of China, and form part of the officially recognized Tibetan ethnic group. This paper first introduces the Namuyi in terms of location, population, and ethnonym. It then provides brief background on the Namuyi language, including a comparison of the dʐə¹¹ qu¹¹ and Luóguōdĭ varieties and a 207-item Swadesh list of English words with their dʐә 11 qu 11 Namuyi equivalents. Finally, it discusses Namuyi religion and provides a transcription of the ka¹¹ ju¹¹ bu⁴⁴ ritual.

This dissertation comprehensively examines the hereditary links, ritual practices and pantheon of indigenous deities on which the spirit-mediums of Upper Tibet rely. Known as lha-pa, dpa' bo and lhamo, these specialists in channeling the gods operate in the overlapping Stod and Byang-thang regions of western and midwestern Tibet. This work is based on in-depth interviews and the translation of a variety of Tibetan texts. It utilizes a diachronic model to explicate ethnohistorical dimensions as well as legendary and contemporary aspects of the spirit-mediums through both oral and literary sources. This work, drawing upon a wide range of ethnographic and textual materials to investigate the phenomenon of lha-bzhugs (spirit-possession) in Upper Tibet, analyses the way in which its historical and present-day characteristics are interrelated. In this article, I explore the concept of the ritualistic way of soul retrieval in the Tarali Magar people of Dolpa Nepal. Moreover, this article focuses on how the Kharche ritual originated and how it is important among the Tarali Magar people. For the Tarali Magar community soul is known as lama (Soul) and it can depart from the human body sometimes and causes a problem for individuals. However, there is a ritual to retrieve the lost soul, which is known as the 'Kharche ritual'. In addition, I examine the socio-cultural importance of the Kharche ritual among the Tarali Magar people of the retrieve the soul of a person. Once it is killed the internal parts such as the lungs, heart, and small intestine are examined thoroughly. On the basis of the examination of internal organs, the good omen and bad omen are interpreted through it. This article helps us to understand how the soul is perceived by the Tarali Magar people in Dolpa Nepal.
Earthbound souls seek help from the living. Through omens, visions, dreams, mediums, or inflicting of illness, these souls communicate with and ask help from their relatives. In this paper, the ritual ragpat ti minatay [lifting of the soul] is described and analyzed as the necessary ritual performed by a Spiritist sect to help earthbound souls. Interviews with key informants and spirits have revealed that suffering souls are restless and burdened spirits fleeing to and fro or bounded in a dark state or place. Due to such predicament of the soul, prayers and related rituals are performed by the faithful Spiritists to alleviate the burdens of the earthbound spirit. This ritual, the ragpat, ensures the soul of a transcendental realm, which is happier and more peaceful than the earth. A successful ragpat rests on the proper observance of its elements; its success is also dependent on the soul's willingness to repent; but ultimately, the success of ragpat rests on God's forgiveness and abundant grace to repentant souls.

Lí Jiànfù and Yèjìng Zhūmù. 2023. A Namuyi Tibetan Breast-Healing Ritual. Asian Highlands Perspectives 63:9-35. This paper describes a breast-healing ritual commonly practiced by Namuyi Tibetans, a little-studied subgroup of Tibetans in the southwest of Sichuan Province, PR China. It seeks to raise awareness of the healing knowledge and traditions of the traditional Namuyi Tibetan secular ȵu²¹ȵu²¹ fu⁵⁴, a breast-healing ritual generally performed by older women in dealing with swollen breasts and pain during the breastfeeding period. It is considered convenient and practical.
