Samaritans Through the Ages: Studies on Samaritan History, Texts, Interpretation, Linguistics and Manuscripts. Berlin: de Gruyter (Studia Samaritana 14), 2024
The Samaritan-Aramaic term “tashqil” refers to a peculiar and characteristic phenomenon of the Samaritan manuscript culture. Serving to embed a paratext into a given Samaritan manuscript, the tashqil makes this paratext manifest through a salient page design that serves to highlight letters of the main text by placing them into a special part of the page. Although the phenomenon is well acknowledged in Samaritan studies, a comprehensive description is still a desiderate. The present article aims to fill this gap, approaching the topic under different perspectives, as follows: 1. Definition of “tashqil” 2. The term “tashqil” 3. The functions of tashqil texts 4. The graphical shape of tashqils 5. The placement of tashqils within the biblical text 6. The interplay between form, function, and placement 7. Language of tashqils 8. Tashqils in bi- and trilingual manuscripts of the Pentateuch 9. History and development of tashqils 10. Tashqils outside Hebrew Pentateuch manuscripts 11. Similar phenomena from other manuscript cultures

During the 6 th millennium BC new cultures developed though new subsistence strategies like farming and cattle breeding – combined with sedentariness, new types of houses, new tools and vessels made of burnt clay. Musical instruments created after own imaginations were formed from clay. Fragments of six possible vessel flutes were discovered in Brunn am Gebirge/locality Wolfholz in site 2 and 3, which date 5670–5350 calBC respectively 5300–5250 calBC. Their shapes are cylindrical and subconical. On the front side, they show three finger holes, on the backside one. Reconstruction with suitable mouth pieces allow five tunes in the fourth and fifth octave with sound levels between 74–93 db. The ranges were calculated until maximal 62 m at surroundings sound level in the free field of 42 dB. Similar objects, interpreted as idols, were found in the Late Starčevo site of Gellénháza, Hungary, in Ovcharovo-gorata and Hotnitsa in Bulgaria. One ball shaped ocarina derives from Mramor in Makedonia. Longbones of birds were still used in creating musical instruments as the small bone whistle from Sesklo, Greece, Middle Sesklo culture proves. Another fragment of a pipe with a finger hole was unearthed in Anzabegovo, Macedonia. The oldest pan pipe belonged to the grave good of a rich man's burial in Mariupol, Ukraine, from the Lower Don culture. Music – compositions with melodies up from the fourth octave – played certainly an important role in every day's live as well as in cultic ceremonies of the Early Neolithic people.

In Lucan's Pharsalia, the geographic landscape plays a multifaceted role, serving as a backdrop to the bellum civile and highlighting its catastrophic consequences. Particularly in Book 9, the African desert becomes central to the narrative, symbolizing and enhancing Cato’s stoic virtus. While Cato's historical march through Libya is documented, his arrival at the temple of Jupiter Ammon is a fictional addition by Lucan. This episode, drawing from the desert’s natural characteristics, contrasts with Alexander the Great's historical visit to the oracle of Ammon, and connects to the poem's overarching theme of divination. The presentation will explore how Lucan uses this blend of historical fact and literary fiction to evoke confusion in the reader, ultimately guiding them towards understanding salvation as residing in the divine nature of the human soul.

Traditionally, human experts authenticated/verified the authorship of signatures. With the emergence of modern computing technologies, there is a push to enable machines/computers deciding on this problem. Today we have both machines and specifically trained human experts to check the authenticity of signatures. The question here is; which is better: man or machine? The answer can be quite subjective; we however, in this paper focus on empirically comparing the performance of the two on the same/similar basis. The novelty of this work is that we applied various state-of-the-art signature verification systems; gathered results and provided the same data to Forensic Handwriting Examiners (FHEs) and finally performed a comparative analysis of the two on the basis of accuracy and error rate. This is an ongoing research and the current paper reports on various interesting results we obtained during our experiments.
