The subject of this report is an assemblage of 69548 potsherds representing a minimum number of 3192 vessels. Almost 99% of these sherds came from vessels that had been completely wheel-finished. Partially wheel-finished pottery, round-bottomed pots, greyware and imports accounted for just over 1% of the total assemblage. Fully wheel-finished vessels included G, J, K, M and L- type of vessels, bowls and goblets. Although these wares point to technologically advanced manufacture by specialist potters, they nonetheless show that local pottery production was traditional and resistant to innovation. ‘Early medieval’ pottery was widely used by the inhabitants of this part of Gdańsk throughout the 13th and in the early 14th century. Pottery production was highly standardised during this period. The most common were vessels of type J, which accounted for as much as 68% of mid-13th century pottery. There were markedly fewer type G vessels, whose frequency in most ceramic assemblages of similar date found in Pomerania is comparable to that of type J vessels. They made up about 20% of the mid-13th-century Tartaczna pottery, their percentage decreasing in later phases. The last significant group were vessels with a cylindrical neck, which comprised around 15% of this assemblage. Dark grey, round-bottomed vessels appear among the pottery dated to the latter half of the 13th century, though their occurrence is negligible even in the latest occupation levels. Pottery of this phase also includes imports, mainly from German sites. Most of them are sherds of proto-stoneware and glazed ware. Their presence in this part of Gdańsk attests to the wealth of some of its inhabitants and the demand for luxury wares.

This text aims to reflect critically on the feasibility and relevance of trying to continue developing a consistent heritage policy in a globalized neoliberal society, bearing in mind that, with rare exceptions, we may be looking just at a rhetorical screen that hides the very impossibility, inoperability, or obsolescence of that policy.
