Abstract
The obligation to teach is one of the important mandates affirmed in the AlQur'an, where education and dissemination of knowledge is considered a sacred duty in Islam. The
Qur'an contains many verses that encourage mankind to seek, teach, and practice knowledge, such as in
Surah Al-'Alaq (96:1-5) which commands reading and learning as a form of worship to Allah. The Prophet
Muhammad PBUH, as the last messenger, is also known as the main teacher who teaches Allah's
revelation to his people. In addition, in Surah At-Taubah (9:122), Allah commands some people to delve
into religious knowledge and convey their understanding to others as part of da'wah. The task of
teaching is not only limited to religious science but also includes all knowledge that brings benefits to
human life. Thus, teaching in Islam is not only an individual right but also a collective obligation aimed at
creating a knowledgeable and civilized society.
Introduction
Education has a very important role in the formation of character, morals, and the development
of science in a society. In Islamic teachings, these educational values even have a strong foundation,
namely in the Qur'an as the holy book of Muslims. The Qur'an not only contains instructions on spiritual
life and worship, but also guidance on various aspects of life, including in terms of education and
learning. Teaching and seeking knowledge are the two main concepts that complement each other in
the Islamic tradition. Teaching is not just considered as a job or profession, but as a noble obligation,
especially for those who have knowledge. This teaching obligation does not only apply to
teachers or formal educators, but also to every individual who has the knowledge and ability to
disseminate it. (Tiffany Shahnaz Rusli, Suri, 2024, p. 11)
In the Qur'an, there are many verses that emphasize the importance of science, the
encouragement to continue learning, and the obligation to pass on knowledge to others. Allah SWT
emphasizes that knowledge is one of the virtues given to humans, and therefore spreading knowledge is
a great responsibility. In Surah AlMujadilah verse 11, Allah mentions that those who believe and have
knowledge will be exalted. This verse not only shows appreciation for knowledge seekers, but also
emphasizes the importance of continuing to spread knowledge to others as a form of social contribution
and worship. The Prophet PBUH also strengthened this through various hadiths that emphasized the
virtue of those who convey knowledge and teach it to others. (Fikria, Husnah, Ardimen, 2024)
The obligation to teach in Islam is also rooted in the concept of amar ma'ruf nahi munkar, which
means inviting goodness and preventing evil. Teaching is a concrete form in carrying out this concept,
where knowledgeable people have a role to invite them to the right path through their
knowledge. Education in Islam is not only limited to religious education, but includes various sciences
that are beneficial for life in this world and the hereafter. The sciences taught in Islam include natural,
social, and also sciences related to morals and good behavior. Therefore, the obligation to teach does
not only mean teaching religious teachings, but also all forms of knowledge that can bring benefits to
society. In the history of Islamic civilization, the role of scholars, teachers, and scholars is very large in
spreading knowledge, both in the field of religion and general science. The success of Islamic civilization
that had experienced its heyday in the Middle Ages was greatly influenced by the great attention paid to
science and education. This tradition of teaching and learning is encouraged by teachings in the Qur'an
and hadith which emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge from the cradle to the
grave. (Badarussyamsi et al., 2021)
In addition, the Qur'an also reminds about moral responsibility for those who hide knowledge. In
Surah Al-Baqarah verse 159, Allah SWT warns that those who hide the knowledge that He has sent down
will receive curses, both from Allah and from His creatures, unless they repent and explain the
knowledge to others. This verse emphasizes that hiding knowledge is an act that is not liked in the
Islamic view, because knowledge must basically be disseminated so that more people can get benefits
and guidance. Therefore, people who have knowledge are expected to teach it, not only for their own
benefit, but also for the good and benefit of the people. In the modern context, the obligation to teach
can be interpreted in many forms, from formal education in schools and colleges, to teaching in family
and community settings. The Qur'an also gives freedom in the method of disseminating knowledge, as
long as its main purpose is to convey goodness and useful knowledge
In today's increasingly technologically advanced world, the obligation to teach in Islam has
become increasingly relevant and important. The Qur'an gives clear instructions that knowledge must
continue to be disseminated in order to create an intelligent, critical, and well-behaved society. The
obligation to teach in the Qur'an is not only about conveying certain material or knowledge, but also
about instilling moral, spiritual, and social values and a sense of social responsibility to the next
generation. Thus, teaching in Islam does not only focus on the transfer of knowledge, but also on the
formation of character in accordance with divine values. The Qur'an teaches that knowledge is a great
gift that must be used to the best of its ability, and teaching is one way to be grateful for this gift. (Kosim,
2023, p. 61)
Research Methods
The methodology of this research uses a qualitative approach with a literature study method to
examine the theme "The Obligation to Teach in the Qur'an." This research aims to understand the
meaning and urgency of the obligation to teach from the perspective of the Qur'an and dive into verses
that discuss the importance of spreading knowledge and teaching in Islam. The data used in this study
are sourced from the main literature, namely the Qur'an and classical and contemporary interpretations,
as well as hadiths relevant to this topic. In addition, this study also utilizes secondary sources in the form
of academic books, scientific journals, articles, and studies from Muslim scholars and scholars that
discuss the obligation of teaching and education in Islam.
The data collection process begins by looking for verses of the Qur'an that contain commands or
recommendations to convey knowledge, either explicitly or implicitly. These verses are then analyzed
using the thematic interpretation method, which groups Qur'anic verses according to certain themes, in
this case related to the obligation to teach. The next step is to examine the interpretations of scholars
regarding these verses in various books of tafsir, such as Tafsir Al-Mishbah, Tafsir Ibn Kathir, and Tafsir
Al-Maraghi, to gain a deeper understanding. The hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH related to the
importance of spreading knowledge are also analyzed to strengthen the understanding of the obligation
to teach in Islam.
After the data is collected, the analysis is carried out using descriptive-analytical techniques,
where each information obtained is presented descriptively and then analyzed to find the value
contained in the teaching concept according to the Qur'an. With this methodology, it is hoped that the
research can provide a comprehensive understanding of the obligation to teach in Islam and how it can
be implemented in the daily lives of Muslims.

1. Al-Alaq verses 1-7
Paragraph 1:
God's first commandment is "Read!" as a symbol of the importance of knowledge and
awareness of God's creation. Learning must begin by mentioning the name of Allah, who is the
source of all knowledge and wisdom.
Paragraph 2:
Allah reminds us that human beings were created from 'alaq (a clot of blood or embryo), which
indicates a very weak human origin. It teaches humans to be humble and not arrogant.
Verses 3-4:
Allah reaffirms the command to read and introduces Himself as God the Most Merciful (AlAkram), who gives man the tool of education, namely the pen. The pen symbolizes the
importance of documentation, learning, and dissemination of knowledge.
Verse 5:
God teaches man what he did not know before. This shows that the ability to learn is a gift of
God and it is the responsibility of humans to make good use of it.
Verse 6:
This verse describes human nature that often goes beyond the limit when feeling enough or
strong. This arrogance often arises because people forget their origins and forget to thank Allah.
Verse 7:
Humans tend to feel that they do not need Allah when they feel that they are self-sufficient or
rich. This verse is a warning that any wealth or excess should not make man forget his relationship
with the Creator.
2. At-Taubah verse 122
• "It is not proper for the believers to go all (to the battlefield)."
This verse makes it clear that not everyone should go to war at the same time. In society, there
are various responsibilities that must be carried out, one of which is to deepen religious
knowledge.
• "Why not go from each of them some to deepen their knowledge of religion."
Allah commands that from each group, there must be a part that remains for tafakkuh fiddin (understanding religion in depth). This includes learning sharia, Islamic law, morals, and
understanding the Qur'an and sunnah.
• "And to give a warning to his people when they have returned to him."
The task of those who study knowledge is to give advice or warnings to their other people after
they have finished jihad. In this way, the Muslim community still gains a balance between
physical defense (jihad) and spiritual and intellectual formation.
• "That they may take care of themselves."
The ultimate goal of religious science is to warn the people to be fearful, obey Allah's
commands, and stay away from His prohibitions.
Conclusion
Teaching is a noble obligation in Islam which has a strong foundation from the Qur'an and the
Sunnah. Teaching activities are not only a process of imparting knowledge, but also an effort to educate,
guide, and inspire individuals to become better individuals. In Islam, Allah commands humans to read,
learn, and convey knowledge as contained in Surah Al-'Alaq verses 1-5, which emphasizes the
importance of education as the basis for human progress.
The obligation to teach is also affirmed in Surah At-Taubah verse 122, which shows that some people
must deepen religious knowledge and then convey it to others. This indicates that teaching is not only
the duty of scholars or teachers, but also every individual who has knowledge. The Prophet PBUH
said, "Convey from me even if it is only one verse," (HR. Bukhari), which shows that teaching obligations
can be carried out according to their respective abilities.
Teaching is not only oriented to the teaching of worldly sciences but also includes spiritual, moral, and
faith values. This process aims to create a generation that is not only intelligent, but also has a noble and
responsible character. In this context, teaching is a worship that brings a person closer to Allah, because
the knowledge that is taught and utilized will become charity whose rewards continue to flow.
In practice, teaching must be done with sincerity, wisdom, and methods that suit the needs of
students. As mentioned in Surah An-Nahl verse 125, teaching must be done with wisdom and good
teaching. This means that a teacher must understand the condition of his students, instill motivation,
and set a good example in daily life.
In conclusion, the obligation to teach in Islam is one of the most important tasks to ensure the
sustainability of knowledge, the values of goodness, and human civilization. This activity is not only a
form of devotion to Allah, but also a real contribution to creating a better society. Through teaching, a
Muslim can carry out his duties as a caliph on earth by spreading useful knowledge and becoming an
inspiration for future generations.
