The first volume of this work spans the period from its foundation in 1811 to the outbreak of war in 1939. It tells how Finland obtained its own monetary system half a century before independence from Russia. It also describes the fate of the Bank of Finland under the revolutionary People’s Delegation in spring 1918, and how the young governor Risto Ryti struggled to protect the markka during the Great Depression.

Initially the question is posed whether a correlation exists between the Finnish war and coin finds in Sweden and if it is possible to determine the nature of such a relationship. Six coin finds have explicitly been associated with the Finnish war by different authors. The coin finds are predominantly composed of Russian coins and the majority of the finds are from Norrbotten and Västerbotten. However, it is plausible that one or more finds in a group of three hoards found in Jämtland and Härjedalen may also be associated with the Danish-Norwegian war activities in that area. The coin finds show the presence of a foreign power whose ambition in many ways was to act in an economically non-aggressive fashion. It is also known that an extensive trade occurred between the Finnish and Swedish populations and so me of the Russian coins found in Sweden may have been manifestations of this everyday trade.

The paper presents the evolution of monetary regimes and monetary reforms in the Soviet Union during the period following the seizure of power in October 1917 until the currency reforms carried out by the Soviet authorities in mid-1924. The studied period gives possibilities for reflection on the “diversity and complexity of monetary practices”, the currency competition and complementarity, the various ways of connecting the different monetary functions (measure, payment, exchange, store of value etc.). Of special interest are the relations between measure (accounting), and exchange (payments), and between large and small currency denominations.

In this chapter we estimate the Swedish money supply and its components for the whole period 1620–2012. First we make a brief description of the Swedish monetary history. The Appendix (pp. 320-332) contains our estimate for the Swedish money supply and its components, which should be the most accurate series on the Swedish money supply today.

After failing to introduce the so-called infalsificables in 1916; given the difficulties to create the Single Bank of Issue included in the Constitution of 1917; and with the pressing need to replace the silver coins that in the second half of 1919 were disappearing from the circulation because of the rapid increase in international prices, in January 1920 the Monetary Commission issued provisionally paper money in two denominations: fifty cents and one peso.
