Typographical Journeys: ATypI 2006, Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI) Annual Conference, Lisbon Portugal, 2006
The path a student takes is undoubtedly a slow and methodological journey and the educational journey of the type designer perhaps among the slowest. That Gerrit Noordzij has had an influence on contemporary type design is indisputable. Exactly how he has been able to accomplish this feat is altogether another matter of discussion. The intent of this study is twofold. First, however brief, it examines how Noordzij approached the classroom environment, the way he approached student learning and the method by which he relayed information. Second, it examines the techniques and conceptual apparatus Noordzij introduced in the classroom and in the discipline. It does not, however, make the assumption that Noordzij’s success can be codified and reproduced. Quite the contrary, such a naïve assumption is detrimental to the learning environment and precisely counter to Noordzij’s success as a teacher. Rather, this essay attempts to treat teaching and learning as a discursive practice with its own language, mutable theory and practical outcomes. This paper will be a reworked form of my MA dissertation from the University of Reading under the direction of Gerry Leonidas.

The researcher investigated four topics’teaching-learning processes or described and analyze strengths and weaknesses in teaching and learning of four difficult topics in Ghanaian Visual Art curriculum. The study employed qualitative research approach with descriptive research and quasi experimental design research methods. Data were gathered via questionnaire administration and observation. Purposive and simple random sampling procedures were used to select 49 respondents. Questionnaire urged teachers and students to describe teaching and learning of layout, composition, design and lettering in two Senior High Schools, whether there are shortcomings in the four topics’ lessons. Responses revealed that there are no standardized textbooks, inadequate tools, equipment and materials for teachers and students to do practicals in the two SHS . During observation of teaching and learning of the four topics’ lessons in General Knowledge in Art, Graphic Design and Picture Making, it was note...

This research explores the impact of active participation in the design process for public health messages as a catalyst for community-building and youth empowerment. This is demonstrated through case studies whereby participants from four different youth groups took part in design workshops to identify and respond to critical public health issues. Through the nourishment of creative expression in an active learning process participants were equipped with knowledge and confidence, inspiring collective design responses. Collaborations among youth groups and with local artists informed the concepts for health messages and helped to build community. Designs were tested and refined through peer-to-peer communication and final messages were approved by public health professionals before being reproduced as large-scale outdoor paintings by the participants and local artists. Paintings were shown to appeal to and resonate among fellow youth audiences. A more sustainable impact, however, was shown as messages and processes became embodied within the participants and artists themselves, as they were empowered to become ongoing agents of change. Initial guidelines and considerations for youth-to-youth communication and sensitization were developed.

The researcher designed alternative methods to fill some gaps in teaching and learning of four topics, dubbed: “Designed alternative teaching approaches for four topics under General Knowledge in Art, Graphic Design and Picture Making in three Senior High Schools in Ashanti Region, Ghana”. This study employed qualitative research method. Using purposive and simple random sampling techniques, sample of three mixed SHS, 77 respondents comprising fourteen teachers and 63 students were selected for study. Questionnaire responses revealed some shortcomings in teaching and learning of layout, composition, design and lettering topics under GKA, GD and PM in the three SHS. During personal observation of teaching and learning of the four topics’ lessons, Visual Art students used improvised tools like bamboo/cane for calligraphy. Some students used 4/5 or six colours for three colour works, a teacher said, black letters can solely be used for citation. Above flaws and others indicate that som...

Educational Research and Reviews
This paper explored the relationship between graffiti arts and civic education among young people in Nigeria. A mixed methods approach was employed to generate and synthesize empirical data. The study was guided by Barbara Rogoff's social constructivism theory. Findings indicated that graffiti arts and artists were present in Nigeria, driven by desires for self-expression, financial gain, and training opportunities sponsored by NGOs for up-and-coming artists. Writing styles varied, but drawing, mural painting, and styles uniquely African remained dominant. Despite the difficulty of acceptance of graffiti as an art form due to its earlier association with transgressive activities, its engagement as a method for emancipatory, participatory, cultural literacy, dialectical relations, and creative learning tools in both formal and informal settings demonstrated its educational-supportive capacity for young adults. The values that graffiti express can help reorient young adults in their thinking and social agency. To this end, this paper recommends rethinking the way we view and relate to graffiti arts and writers; incorporating graffiti art education into school curriculum reforms in Nigeria; and using an interactive approach, including new media, to understanding graffiti art produced and displayed by young adults.
