Abstract
Streamwise space time correlations of the longitudinal fluctuating velocity at the beginning of the buffer layer in an unsteady channel flow are reported. It is shown that the small scale turbulence is sensitive to the imposed unsteadiness since the modulation characteristics of the Taylor lengthscale vary considerably in the imposed frequency range invetigated here. The modulation characteristics of the convection velocity coincide reasonably well with those of the local velocity showing that the Taylor hypothesis may still be used in unsteady flows.
