Romanticism

Romanticism

Oxford University Press eBooks, 2009
Abstract
This article looks at Romantic literature. It discusses flaws and criticisms of Romanticism and highlights the resurgent of interest in German and American Romanticism. It evaluates whether Romanticism can redeem modernism and whether Romanticism is still needed today. It describes the prose of Romanticism and the idea that poetry and prose determines the whole of the Romantic philosophy of art. It also argues that the critical interanimation and contamination of languages in Romanticism takes place at the level of everyday life and language and that the prose of Romanticism is the prose of the everyday world from which we derive meaning and intelligibility.
