Preface and Interviews During 2020-2021 the Faculty of Theology and Religion at the University of the Free State celebrated its 40 years of existence, using the theme "Transforming theology and religion?". The celebrations started early in the year 2020 with the academic conference A battle for the heart. How (not) to transform church and society, hosted by the Department of Practical and Missional Theology. A number of local and international scholars attended this conference. Speakers at the conference "A battle for the heart. How (not) to transform church and society" In March of the same year, a public lecture was hosted by the Department Old and New Testament Studies. The speaker for this lecture was Prof. Stefan Fischer from the University of Vienna, with a paper titled The transformation of theology and religion in and by the Biblical wisdom literature. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting restrictions caused the rest of the planned programme to be postponed.

This book by Joshua Searle is passionate, provocative and at times polemic. It is part of the After Christendom Series which was launched with Stuart Murray’s,Post-Christendom in 2004, and continues very much in that vein. Searle assumes we are living in a post-Christendom era, with Christendom understood and portrayed in overwhelmingly negative terms. It is passionate, and in this clearly reflects the author’s own commitments and approach. Searle’s overwhelming concern is for a passionate and missional church that engages dynamically with the contemporary culture. A central way the book considers the relationship between church and culture, as hinted in the subtitle, is that of the prophetic. Searle asks in chapter 2, ‘Where have all the prophet’s gone’ and explores ways that the church might regain its prophetic voice in the public square. On this basis the book moves into quite a range of different areas. In many ways the book is really about the church as a missional community and the agent of God’s kingdom, and then more specifically about how the church engages in theology and forms its members and then the contribution that theological colleges have to this process...
The Saint John Paul II Theological Society is run by the seminarians and students of the Pontifical University of St. Patrick’s College, in Maynooth. On behalf of the JP Soc. Team, I express our gratitude to the Bishops of Ireland and to the Student Union of Maynooth University for their generous financial support. We provide a forum for theological discussion, in an effort to foster a deeper understanding of the richness, depth and beauty of our Catholic faith. We try to achieve this by hosting talks and debates on explorations into the writings of various theologians and by discussing various theological questions that affect us today. We provide a forum for faith formation that is faithful to the Church. This year we hosted 12 very different events. I wish to thank my hardworking-team for all their support, friendship and generosity in organizing and facilitating all of these events. A special word of thanks to Fr. Dave Marsden – whom we choose to be our spiritual patron for this year. Pope St. John Paul II pray for us, Amen. Fergal Cummins - President, Saint John Paul II Theological Society, Maynooth (5th May 2015).

The complicated plurality of the so called postmodern society in its different realities and modes of life requires not only professionalism in "soul care" but also intensive changes of the structures in which pastoral practice takes place: especially concerning the categorial, parish-and lifespace("Lebensraum")-orientated pastoral manifestations.

The only constant in theological education is change, despite brave attempts to hold the tide back in some quarters. Yet, Western-based theological education remains the norm globally. The Faculty of Theology at the University of Pretoria exemplifies this norm despite its commitment to Africanisation. This article will consider transformation through the lens of the leadership of Prof. Johan Buitendag, who has led the transformation initiative from his own shared leadership perspective as dean since 2010. Change in the faculty will be analysed through analysis of the faculty plans, with particular reference to teaching, learning and research. Consideration will be given to a more radical proposal for future transformation under the initiative of Africanisation.

The article explores moral challenges and opportunities facing South African churches at the beginning of a new century. It sets out by briefly describing major hermeneutic and societal shifts during the past decades. Numerous structural changes have been accomplished in the South African society, particularly since 1994. However, these have not always been accompanied by attitudinal and behavioural changes, even among Christians. On the level of a collective consciousness the scars of a deeply divided society prevail. Secondly, some implications of these shifts are investigated - for South African churches in general, and religious education and (Reformed) theological training in particular. Serious and complex issues facing these institutions are described as essentially ligtheologicall/ig in nature. Thirdly, as counterfoil to the present so-called "moral crisis" in South Africa, the article investigates aspects of the New Testament's "rhetoric of theological vi...
