Over the course of the last decade, it has been hard to ignore the repeated rallying cries for methodological innovation in the social sciences. This book puts the spotlight on methods and approaches which have become increasingly popular in recent years amongst youth researchers. It showcases a wide range of imaginative and creative methods, including music elicitation, mental mapping, blog analysis, visual methods, arts-based methods and mobile methods. With contributors drawn from diverse disciplinary and methodological backgrounds, the collection highlights the ongoing importance of perennial concerns relating to research ethics and methodological reflexivity, and draws attention to the pervasive influence of participatory and mixed methods approaches within much contemporary youth research.
Youth Research : The Essentials, 2019
Research on youth is becoming increasingly recognised as an indispensable companion of effective, impactful policy and practice. To make it more accessible and better understood, this publication, written by members of the Pool of European Youth Researchers, co-ordinated by the EU-Council of Europe youth partnership, aspires to help the reader gain a better and immediate understanding of the purpose, scope and usefulness of research on youth. It also describes how various stakeholders in the youth field, and beyond, can make use of youth research. It does not intend to present the state of contemporary youth research, nor showcase youth research projects, but focuses on addressing specific questions such as: What is youth research? What are the theoretical influences of youth research? Why do we need youth research? It is the authors’ wish, through this publication, to make research on youth closer and more accessible to all actors in the youth field in Europe and beyond. http://youth-partnership-eu.coe.int [email protected]

Equity and discrimination was nominated as an important issue in Australia today by over one quarter (27.6%) of respondents and much more can be done to combat discrimination at a systemic, as well as an interpersonal level, across the nation. Connected and participating Participating in activities helps young people to build social networks, as well as to develop new skills. Over two thirds of young people indicated that they had participated in sports as a participant and/or a spectator. Around half of young people reported participation in volunteer work or arts, cultural and musical activities. Research has identified a clear nexus between creativity and addressing mental illness. 17 Considering young people's concerns about mental health, expanded access to creative arts activities could be a key support. Creative arts therapies such as dance, music, poetry, drama and art provide opportunities for young people to express emotions symbolically that they may otherwise not be able to communicate. 18 Creative Youth Initiative (CYI) Creative Youth Initiative (CYI), is a unique service that provides free TAFE accredited programs for young people aged 16-25 who are facing many and varied challenges in their lives, such as homelessness, mental health concerns, substance abuse, family breakdown, unemployment or poor educational experiences.

In South Africa, there is an increasing realization of the need for engaging youth when developing programmes meant to positively nurture them. Current youth development practices fail to reflect youth aspirations because of dearth of appropriate approaches of engaging them. This exploratory study sought to fill this gap and obtain the perceptions of school-going and out of school youth in Makhado Local Municipality on various dimensions of their own development. 241 youth, comprising 89 out of school and 152 school-going youth from 47 villages in the municipality participated in a youth development-focused workshop. Focus group discussions and semi-structured interview guides were used to obtain youth perceptions. Both categories of youth perceived involvement in sporting activities, pride in own country, better education and employment as the most critical determinants of youth development. Inadequate access to reliable information, involvement of youth in crime, alcohol and drug abuse, and lack of support from communities, among others, also hampered youth development. This information is useful when crafting strategies for youth development.
