Saloul, I., Baillie, B. (eds) The Palgrave Encyclopedia of Cultural Heritage and Conflict. Palgrave Macmillan, Cham., 2024
Since the onset of Syria's civil war in 2011, both the people and the heritage of the country have suffered devastating loss. Focusing on the damage and destruction done to key heritage sites such as the Old City of Aleppo and Palmyra, this entry traces the complex consequences of the war for Syria's rich cultural heritage. It then documents the myriad initiatives led by a suit of multilateral bodies, international nongovernmental organizations (INGOs), and state actors to protect and reconstruct Syria's heritage. From here, the entry documents the various criticisms that have been leveled at these projects drawn from in-depth scholarly works on the topic. It also examines the extant literature which documents the complex array of views held by Syrians-in terms of their divergent views on heritage, the extent to which they believe it is a priority, and their support for both foreign and domestic projects to protect and reconstruct it. The entry concludes by noting that such findings hold important implications for future heritage projects in Syria and across other (post-) conflict contexts where mass heritage destruction has taken place.

This article is an open access article distributed under the terms and conditions of the Creative Commons Attribution (Open-source 3-D printing has played a pivotal role in revolutionizing the additive manufacturing (AM) landscape by making distributed manufacturing economic, democratizing access, and fostering far more rapid innovation than antiquated proprietary systems. Unfortunately, some 3-D printing manufacturing companies began deviating from open-source principles and violating licenses for the detriment of the community. To determine if a pattern has emerged of companies patenting clearly open-source innovations, this study presents three case studies from the three primary regions of open-source 3-D printing development (EU, U.S., and China) as well as three aspects of 3-D printing technology (AM materials, an open-source 3-D printer, and core open-source 3-D printing concepts used in most 3-D printers). The results of this review have shown that non-inventing entities, called patent parasites, are patenting open-source inventions already well-established in the open-source community and, in the most egregious cases, commercialized by one (or several) firm(s) at the time of the patent filing. Patent parasites are able to patent open-source innovations by using a different language, vague patent titles, and broad claims that encompass enormous swaths of widely diffused open-source innovation space. This practice poses a severe threat to innovation, and several approaches to irradicate the threat are discussed.CC BY

After conflict and mass atrocity, stories of the past take center stage. Whose voices are heard, whose sufferings forgotten? Increasingly, battles over history are fought in court, where victims seek recognition for past injustice. But how are narratives of the past, or what Maurice Halbwachs coined collective memory shaped, in a world where legal bodies increasingly exert a power 'to tell'? What role can international legal bodies play as storytellers? In 1994, after one of the most solemn examples of mass atrocity since Holocaust, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda opened a groundbreaking space for victims of sexual violence to tell their stories. How it Chapter 1: Introduction 1 Chapter 1: Introduction Death is the sanction of everything that the storyteller has to tell. He has borrowed his authority from death.

Nowadays, using combined methods of suspended and attached growth are on the rise due to their effects on the structure volume decrease and efficiency increase in wastewater treatment systems. This paper aims at using the moving bed biofilm reactor to increase the efficiency of diluted municipal wastewater treatment. In most other papers, the used media are called improper due to their high cost, hard application, and availability. As a result, there has been an increasing interest in applying more practical and cheaper method with higher applications in various research areas. In this study Electrical corrugated duct is used as it is cheap, proper, and more available. In order to compare the results prepared of the two similar pilot activated sludge, one is used with media and the other without a media (blank). It should be added that this study was done under environmental conditions and at 13-27 c o . according to studies, in order to prove the used system efficiency, the biochem...
