Paul presupposes that God exists, the same God who is set forth in the Old Testament as the creator and sustainer of the world. In 2 Corinthians 4:1-6, Paul affirms that his message has divine authority, divine truthfulness, divine power to overcome resistance to its claims, and divine presence through the glory of Christ. Paul's message also shows how, in the midst of the Roman Empire's situation of multiple cultures and multiple languages, he preaches a gospel with universal claims, in "the open statement of the truth" (2 Cor 4:3).

It is shown in four situations of increasing generality that conversational invariance under permutation of participant roles implies restriction of conversational changes to description by a small subgroup of all possible transformations. The last of the four situations is n-person conversation; hence, the mathematical techniques here used are applicable to situations of greater complexity than the three-person conversations on which the present article focuses. A final section discusses possible applications to situations in descriptive phonology and grammar.

An etymologising explanation would say that paraklesis really means 'calling along side', from klesis 'calling' and para 'along side'. Synchronically, this is just plain false. ...

The automaton and the algebraic formalism can be so constructed that they reject ungrammatical quotations.

This analysis constitutes an application of semiotics and also a contribution to understanding of the nature of logic within the context of human meaning. Each system of logic is best adapted to represent one portion of human rationality. Acknowledging this correlation between systems and their targets helps explain the usefulness of more than one system. Among these systems, the two-valued system of classical logic takes its place. All the systems of logic can be incorporated into a complex mathematical model that has a place for each system and that represents a larger whole in human reasoning. The model can represent why tight formal systems of logic can be applied in some contexts with great success, but in other contexts are not directly applicable. The result suggests that human reasoning is innately richer than any one formal system of logic.

Three modern myths often interfere with understanding Gen 1. We propose to uncover these myths, in order to remove obstacles to understanding Gen 1. Rather than beginning with the myths immediately, let us first consider one strand in contemporary interpretation. This approach begins by reading Gen 1 within its ancient Near Eastern context. It compares and contrasts Gen 1 with ancient Near Eastern myths. By so doing, it endeavors to show that many modern readers misread Gen 1. They read with scientific assumptions and scientific questions already in mind, and they may easily read into Gen 1 detailed scientific information that is not there. Depending on what they read in, they may find that Gen 1 does or does not agree with modern science. But the whole procedure is mistaken, because it involves misinterpretation. Readers should not seek for scientific teaching in Gen 1, but treat it for what it is, a document that comes from another culture t...
