The purpose of the survey was to test some hypotheses on the interrelationships between certain kinds of human capital and of social capital; information was collected on education as well as other forms of human capital, and on a number of social capital factors under the categories of household composition, group membership, values, and various forms of trust. Household expenditure was also explored in detail, both as a proxy for household income and in order to determine current investment in human and social capital. This paper contains the tabulations of all the information gathered, plus a number of crosstabulations showing links that are of possible interest. The statistics are adjusted for survey design, thus applicable to Soweto as a whole.

It draws on previously unutilised personal archives of some key figures of the time.

Morning Star consisted of a five-day seminar and a five-day map exercise, which were designed to provide senior officers of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), as well as invited participants from civil society and the armed forces of other Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, with a theoretical and practical orientation towards the doctrine, planning, and command and control of peace support operations at the strategic, operational and tactical levels. The SANDF enlisted the assistance of the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), a non-government research institute which focuses on security studies, in the planning and conduct of this high-level training seminar. The significance of the latter lies in the fact that expertise related to conflict management, peacekeeping and peacebuilding is no longer regarded as a purely, or even predominantly, military domain. Although this has been recognised for some time in the more developed world, the emergence of new partnerships for the pursuit of peace in Africa is a development which should be nurtured, if it is to grow into an effective instrument for appropriate action.

This study consists of three parts. Firstly, a historical overview since January 2016; secondly, a summary of the relevant statistics; thirdly, a summary of the resources and activities that Hungary has engaged to deal with the issue. In conclusion, some reflections are made around the fashionable concept of post-truth.

Seven primary factors and three secondary ones were identified: the two strongest characteristics are a distinct form of social capital typical of higher-income households, and a distinction between trust in formal institutions and other forms of trust.

It is based on a household survey, carried out in July 1999 for the wider purpose of researching the human and social capital of the Soweto community in general. This study has the particularity that the sample of the selfemployed is based on self-definition and probing: thus it includes an unusually wide range, from established entrepreneurs to those who are carrying on some kind of moneymaking activity to make ends meet (11% of the adult population are found to be selfemployed under the definition used in this study). There are special sections on the use of credit, on stokvel membership, comparing registered and unregistered businesses, and profiling those who consider themselves successful.

It aims to go beyond the journalistic and political perspective: to furnish a comprehensive descriptive background of facts, timeline narrative, analytic demographic data on refugees, and references to primary sources. The target audience are (a) those who seek factual references to improve the current debates, (b) those who will begin to write the story of Hungary’s response to the 2015 European Migrant Crisis from a historical perspective. It address the contentious issues of the day, such as the demographic and national mix of asylum seekers, and the major points of debate about Hungary’s response.
