A group home is a residence organized around a certain demographic and provides social and medical services, such as leisure activities or meals, and some form of supervision. Examples include care homes for elderly, residences for children/juveniles who cannot live with their families, halfway houses for people with addictions or minor conflicts with the law (group home).
A note on privacy: Certain types of group homes (such as halfway houses) may not publicly advertise the fact that they are a social facility, rather than a normal residential facility. Do map such facilities if there is clear signage outside, but mappers may consider omitting them if the facility is not publicly displayed as such and should follow verifiability guideline. See also this documentation on other reasons not to map (in particular on the topic of safety concerns).
Note: Between Oct 2010 - Jun 2016, this value subsumed the nursing homes as defined in social_facility=nursing_home. If you know a nursing home still tagged group home, not fitting the definition above, please migrate the tag. Please check each case individually, automated edits are discouraged.
How to map
Set a node at the centre of the group home or draw an area along its outline.
Add the tag amenity=social_facility + social_facility=group_home, and specify the target group with social_facility:for=*; i.e., senior, child, juvenile, orphan, disabled, mental_health, drug_addicted.
OSM use does not limit the size of such home, which however can be tagged with capacity=*.
