An open letter from the publisher: Subscribe to Haaretz and help shape Israel

I never knew Israel had a constitution.

There is no moderator to see that the most Anti Semetic and Anti Israel Torah is kept off the boards. There is very little actual dialogue or exchange of ideas. It is just a constant gush of vile, ignorant Islamic propaganda. Any attempt to try and present a more balanced view is impossible as it seems that the same clique of Jew haters post the same hatred filled messages day after day. Keep on begging. Hopefully you will disappear and the rabble will have to find somewhere else to vent their hatred.

What is wrong to shape Israel as liberal constitutional democracy with pluralism and human rights as in North America and rid Israel of the Palestinian headache . ;so having a quiet and good life in our homeland where we can move there without worries.

Do you mean you're listening to our talk? I'm a long, long time subscriber. People who love and care for the paper have been telling you for years and years now: Your paper is radicalizing. It is a Tel-Aviv bubble thing. By enforcing your radical views you are loosing us. We no longer trust the paper. We read you, we listen to you, and we pay. Is this a dialogue or a monologue?

Amos Shocken, Haaretz used to be a real moderate quality newspaper; it has become a newsletter with only 6.1% share in the Israeli market because of its condescending elitist attitude and employing lunatic reporters like Gideon Levy and Amirra Haas. If you are really as smart as you think you are, you would get out of your bubble and evaluate your enterprise honestly before you deplete your bank account.

Thank you Amos Schocken for Haaretz, and my best wishes for more success, and last I want to convey my deep appreciation and respect to all your editors, journalists and writers. Haaretz is a beacon to journalism. Special appreciation and respect to Amira Hass, the great Gideon Levy, Akiva Eldar and others. Sincere wishes for the voice of wisdom and farsighted lovers of a democratic Israel besides a future Palestinian State.

how can you hope to sell newspapers when readers do not support you? a middle of the road newspaper with no histrionics from the likes of haas and levy would be a good journal of record and would be worth every dollar we pay

Amos, the problem starts with you. There was a time when the paper was left wing, but not necessarily radical. Little by little, you became radical and as a result you lost readers and with readers, you lost posters. If you cannot keep your posters, then there is no hope for the paper. Nor can you keep posters if they are often censored. Now it is too late since posting is impossible if most readers cannot read the articles in the first place.

I wonder how many of the negative remarks,below, and in general are from people who pay for HaAretz; Is there a group organized by the right-wing to smear HaAretz? By whom are they payed for their insular disrespect? HaAretz is one of the few counterweights to the increasing nationalistic and anti-humanitarian influence of the right and extreme right. I will continue to subscribe.

I love Israel and the Jewish people, being an Evangelical Zionist. I do know legit criticism and anti Semitism are worlds apart, but when you have articles comparing Israel to apartheid South Africa popping all the time, something is wrong. Israel must be criticized for its errors? Always. But delegitimation, demonization and double standards are unacceptable. And Haaretz if full of them, usually have the three, in the same article, in many different articles.

Haaretz feeds the thinking to the world's Jew haters. If you want to find ways to hurt Israel. .. find them here first. Of course world media quotes Haaretz, it's THE source for anti-Zionism, haters of religious Jews ( but not other religions) and cover for everyone who despises Jews. "Hey, we're quoting Haaretz, which declares it is Israel' s most respected source. " Haaretz believes that Western culture is more advanced than Jewish culture and if Western culture hates Israel as a colonial occupier, who are Jews to say otherwise? So it is the anti-Semites of the world who most adore Haaretz. It gives them all legitimacy.

Do not give a penny to Schocken and his gang of self-hating Jews. Let them beg to their leftist masters and the beloved Pals.

It irks me and I am sure others that we are censored when quoting UN Resolutions or Israels breach of previously signed agreements and other damning factual information that reveals more of the truth about Israels expansionist goals. Maybe if Haaretz was more honest and open I might be swayed to subscribe. but while imbalance still infects many articles I shall stay as I am. I do however give huge applause to Amira Haas and Gideon Levy......regardless of right wing insults on their articles that breach Haaretz posting rules they do not baulk one bit at speaking the truth.

Without Haaretz the English speaking or Hebrew speaking outsider would never be able to penetrate the thicket of lies and disinformation that surrounds the colonialist racist occupation. When a just two-or one-state solution finally comes it will be in no small part due to the shining light of Haaretz. The right wingers, as these talkbacks well attest, HATE that. Keep up the good work leading this one of a kind israeli national treasure, Mr.Shocken. My yearly subscription is among the best money I ever will spend.

the paper is a credit to journalism, a courageous effort to print the truth without regard to who might be offended, even if it is a large part of the public. I eagerly subscribe, and need no appeal to renew, because this approach is so rare in the United States. Haaretz publishes what Americans will never be told by their own domestic media, though Newsweek is perhaps escaping this for one. The only reservation I have is that you feel the need to wave the flag in order to get subscribers. Follow the truth, wherever it leads, and you will rarely find that it supports nationalism, an easily assumed blindness that does not ask questions.

Some readers want only certain articles on specific issues. Others want to read only one journalist. This would justify selling individual articles. On the other hand, selling daily access (24 hrs), monthly access, or quarterly access would be another method to match customer demand and increase revenue. Lastly, some users who won't or can't subscribe might use paypal to contribute to a "Friends Of Haaretz" fund to support liberal and progressive news perspectives. Small payments do add up when the number of contributors is large. Consider the success of the March Of Dimes Foundation.

Perhaps you could update your service as the NYT recently did. They have an app that works on the PC that eliminates the wait for individual articles. Great paper and I enjoy my subscription

I would appreciate the possibility to read from time to time the hebrew edition of Haaretz without supplemental pay, since, living in the Diaspora, the english edition supplies enough information and opinions. However, it would help practizing hebrew and get some inside feeling of the sabra mood..

Pay for it ? You must be kidding ! ! ! Newspapers make their money on advertising. Advertisers want to see readership. I am registered reader. I have gone from reading as many stories as possible in the paper to 6 a month and now down to 3 a month. Believe me Mr. Editor in chief I will not be sending you my money to read your paper. There a thousands of free newspapers out there.

Being interested in Israel and to care about its continued existence have become a historic necessity to me. Throughout history the Jews have been at the mercy of others, and thus Israel regained independance in 1948 (giving Jews a homeland they deserve). Without minimizing the suffering of the Palestinians, Israel increasingly shares the fate of pre-state Jewry. Critical coverage of Israel and the Middle East may be necessary, but I believe Haaretz should never forget the origins of its name. Wishing you all well, and please keep in mind `freedom never stands to reason`.

Haaretz is not for those who are pro-Israel, only anti-Israel. We all know it.

I've been a haaretz subscriber for years (print and digital, when they were still selling english print in America) and despite all the gideon levy-esque pieces haaretz frequently publishes, I have always believed in its mission, which I thought naively was to open up broader discussions about Israel and support the liberal viewpoints I generally subscribe to. This piece has shocked me, mostly because of its total disregard for israels jewish character. If this is the best haaretz's publisher has got, I'm not interested.

Haaretz attracts the loner who is searching for something to get behind. And so Haartez leads the attack against religion. Some would classify this as a form of antisemitism.

Al little to the right, a little to the left, that means NO commitment. I prefer honest right wing extremists to a liberal any day, you know where you stand with them.

Where are the days when some talkbacks counted 400+ responses? I understand that it costs more moderators, but it would confer to the paper a truly popular, living character and influence, and among the mass uninformed posts one could find plenty of real gems by Tosefta, Yaakov Sullivan and others that often surpassed the article writers in quality and detail.

The paper represents the foes of Israel more than Israel and Jews.

Israel doesn't have a constitution. Does Ha'Aretz call for a Constituent Assembly to draft one? If so, do the non-Jews get an equal right to vote, or are they excluded for not accepting the Jewish Nature of the State?

Over and above "Haaretz" I read every day four other nespapers on line- New York Times, Al Jazeera, Al Ahram and The Guardian - all of them allow access to each and every article. In contrast, my subscription to Haaretz allows me ONLY 10 articles a month which I consider a very severe restriction. If all these other newspapers can do it - why can't Haaretz?? Some days, each and every article, I would have liked to read, I did not have access to which is very frustrating. Another frustrating aspect is the ever increasing advertising all over the paper - most annoying. I tell my friends how wonderful it is to be able to learn about what is REALLY happening in Israel specifically as far as the Palestinian issue is concerned which is what your paper provides. I do very much appreciate that. Could you be a little more generous with the access problem problem - better yet - can you allow access as the aformentioned newspaper are doing? By the way - for me one of the most compelling reasons for reading your newspaper is excellent journalists like Gideon Levy, Amira Haas and Peter Beinart. Unfortunately their articles are most of the time not accessible which is a pity. Despite all that, your newspaper remain one of my favourite just the same. Keep up the good work and be a little bit more generous with access.

As a proud and loyal subscriber I salute you for your courageous journalism, and strongly request that you revise your recent website re-design: please get rid of the moving slide show on the home page, it‘s highly difficult and uncomfortable to read or follow, truly unpleasant, and out of place on a serious publication.
