Whisky design remains an underexposed object of study in the field of design research, yet whisky... more Whisky design remains an underexposed object of study in the field of design research, yet whisky is rising in global popularity at an extraordinary rate. In this MA thesis a review of relevant literature is first executed, after which a semiotic analysis of five Dutch and five Scotch whisky brands is performed, including logo, bottle, and packaging design, as well as website design and promotional materials. What follows is a subjective and synchronic account of these brands and their (intentional or not) expression of national identity. This dissertation hopes to have ignited a spark in its readers; to have given insights that inspire others to conduct further research.

The essay has subsequently applied a structuralist case study of a Japanese water jug stemming from the 'Edo' period (1603-1868). In the third and final section a critique of structuralist approach to material culture has been written, using the case study as evidence.
