Perspectives on Material Culture in Northeast India by Tilok Thakuria, 2019

For long, the study was dominated by archaeological and museum studies. However, recently the study on the use of objects in relation to human activity gained momentum and has entered the scholarly discourse of different disciplines. At present, a number of studies from the fields of history, anthropology, sociology, design and cultural studies focus on material culture from their own perspectives. The objects and artifacts are also important in the socio-cultural performances of a society. Considering several discussions on performances as a symbol of cultural richness and their role in the life of the people of traditional societies, it is important to highlight the fact they would have been meaningless without the support of the objects that provide meaning to the performances. It is also vital to point out that surplus production and the involvement of trade and exchange contextualized the value of the materials and has significant influence on symbols of cultural and social status, identity structure and gender construction. On this background, the paper determines to look into the material culture of the Khasi-Jaintia society mainly on the basis of the use of metal and silk objects in some of the cultural performances. In the course of the discussion it also analyses the cultural symbolism of the objects and performances. Keywords: Material Culture, Objects, Symbolism, Performances, Metal, Silk, Khasi- Jaintia.

On the one hand, various Christian denominations were established and on the other hand, there was a move to give a shape to the indigenous religion. However, studies on the expansion of Christianity and the works on the Church histories of the Khasi-Jaintia Hills have mostly focused on the dominant churches, Presbyterian and Catholic Churches. Very few literatures exist on the other Churches and there is none on the Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA Church). The study about Christian missions in the Khasi Jaintia Hills, therefore, can be elaborately expanded through a wider investigation from a more historical perspective. All churches regardless of the magnitude in number of followers or the duration of their existence in the Khasi Jaintia Hills have to be covered. They should be included in the study whet...

Scholars attempt in their own understanding to define the identity of these communities. In this regard, Khasi-Jaintia community in the state of Meghalaya is no exception from such development. A number of regional histories written by colonial writers, Christian missionaries and scholars both from within and outside the region have been about the Khasi-Jaintia community. However, the question of identity continues to puzzle not only the scholars but the common people who are trying to understand their identity in the midst of changes in the social, cultural, political and religious arenas. It is from this perspective that the paper tries to shed light on the historiographical issues dealing particularly with identity in Khasi-Jaintia society. The paper starts with a brief conceptual discussion on identity. The second part focuses on the issues of identity in the context of North East India and the last part deals with identity in Khasi-Jaintia society with reference to the historical writings.
