Tablets were prepared by the wet granulation method. The physicochemical characteristics of polymer (Gum olibanum), and pre-compressional parameters and postcompressional parameters were evaluated, all the parameters were found to be within the limits. The dissolution studies were performed using USP apparatus type-2 using phosphate bufferpH 6.8 as dissolution medium. The drug release was dependent on the type and concentration of the polymer. The results of studies showed that the gum olibanum alone is not able to control the drug release efficiently, however the combination of gum olibanum with other polymers (HPMC, Na.CMC) could efficiently produce the sustaining effect. Among all the formulations of metformin, the gum olibanum in combination with HPMC which is (F9) was found to possess better controlled release of m...

The microcapsules were prepared with combination of different concentration of gum and pectin and the formulations were optimized on the basis of drug release up to 24 hrs. The drug and polymers were subjected for compatibility studies using FTIR & DSC. The formulated microcapsules were characterized for particle size, percentage drug entrapment efficiency, surface morphology, mucoadhesivity and in vitro drug release study. The microcapsules exhibited good mucoadhesive property in the in vitro wash-off test and also showed high percentage drug entrapment efficiency. The optical microscopic studies revealed that mean particle size of all the formulations was found in the range of 912.16 ± 16.33 to 998.14.12 μm and percentage of drug entrapment was between 39...

Natural gums became a thrust area in majority of investigations in the novel drug delivery systems. The use of natural polymers (gums) for pharmaceutical applications is attractive because they are economical, readily available, non-toxic and capable of chemical modifications, potentially biodegradable and also biocompatible. The gum olibanum is an oleo gum resin obtained from Boswellia serrata belongs to family Burseraceae and the dikamali obtained from Gardenia gummifera belongs to family Rubiaceae. The Proximate analysis and nature of gum was confirmed by Physico-chemical characterization (Ash value, Extractive value & LOD), thermal analysis (FTIR & XRD) and phytochemical investigation by HPTLC. The above mentioned parameters were set for olibanum and dikamali, which can be a useful tool in identification of gums.
