In this paper I describe a new NASA project to develop a fully general relativistic approach to t... more In this paper I describe a new NASA project to develop a fully general relativistic approach to the important problem of neutron star coalescence. Unlike the other lectures in this volume, this contribution contains no results, only plans and motivation for work to be done! This project is just beginning, and its impact will be felt only after a couple of years of effort. My goal here is to outline plans to build on present approaches, including important physical effects that have not been possible until now. In addition to a deeper understanding of the neutron star coalescence, this project will also result in a fully general relativistic, parallel, hydro code that will be made available to the astrophysics community for a study of many problems in relativistic astrophysics. I will discuss some aspects of the difficulties one encounters in solving the fully coupled set of Einstein-Hydro equations.

In four lectures I review numerical techniques for solving the Einstein equations on supercompute... more In four lectures I review numerical techniques for solving the Einstein equations on supercomputers, with application to colliding black hole spacetimes. There are two parts to the lectures: (1) numerical relativity and parallel computing, and (2) evolving black-hole spacetimes. In the first part, I describe the astrophysical motivation behind this work, the formulation of the equations for numerical relativity, slicing and gauge conditions, numerical techniques for solving the equations, and general coding and parallel computing issues. This is a general guide to developing codes to solve the Einstein equations. In the second part I focus on an application of the techniques discussed previously to black-hole spacetimes. I discuss black-hole initial-data sets and their construction, coordinate choices for the initial data and evolution, boundary conditions and apparent horizon techniques, event-horizon finders and applications, and recent progress in this area.

Black Hole Spectroscopy: Determining Waveforms from 3D Excited Black Holes

We present the first results for Cauchy nonlinear evolution of 3D, nonaxisymmetric distorted blac... more We present the first results for Cauchy nonlinear evolution of 3D, nonaxisymmetric distorted black holes. We focus on the extraction and verification of 3D waveforms determined by numerical relativity. We show that the black hole evolution can be accurately followed through the ringdown period, and comparing with a recently developed perturbative evolution technique, we show that many waveforms in the black hole spectrum of modes, such as ℓ = 2 and ℓ = 4, including weakly excited nonaxisymmetric modes (m = 0), can be accurately evolved and extracted from the full nonlinear numerical evolution. We also identify new physics contained in higher modes, due to nonlinear effects. The implications for simulations related to gravitational wave astronomy are discussed.

Af... more ABSTRACT I describe approaches to the study of black hole spacetimes via numerical relativity. After a brief review of the basic formalisms and techniques used in numerical black hole simulations, I discuss a series of calculations from axisymmetry to full 3D that can be seen as stepping stones to simulations of the full 3D coalescence of two black holes. In particular, I emphasize the interplay between perturbation theory and numerical simulation that build both confidence in present results and tools&#39;to interpret results of future simulations of coalescence.

Numerical Hydrodynamic Models of Neutron Star Mergers

We discuss our numerical models of neutron star mergers and coalesence. These models have been ca... more We discuss our numerical models of neutron star mergers and coalesence. These models have been carried out with a 3-D numerical Newtonian hydrodynamics code. We discuss the numerical methods employed by this code and will present several models of collisions of neutron stars. We will also discuss the gravitational radiation signal emitted by these collsions which can be calculated via the quadrapole emission formula. Finally we will discuss the questions of angular momemtum and energy loss in Newtonian calculations as well as Post-Newtonian corrections to our calculations.

We present a detailed analysis of binary black hole evolutions in the last orbit and demonstrate ... more We present a detailed analysis of binary black hole evolutions in the last orbit and demonstrate consistent and convergent results for the trajectories of the individual bodies. The gauge choice can significantly affect the overall accuracy of the evolution. It is possible to reconcile certain gaugedependent discrepancies by examining the convergence limit. We illustrate these results using an initial data set recently evolved by Brügmann et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 211101 (2004)]. For our highest resolution and most accurate gauge, we estimate the duration of this data set's last orbit to be approximately 59M ADM .
