It has pro-L vided the seed for a great deal of discussion, and there have been many theories of personal identity that can appropriately be regarded as descendants of Locke's theory.' But 1 think many of these descendants may be illegitimate ones, for I suspect the theory discussed as Locke's is more legendary than real. And, although this heavily discussed theory has undoubtedly proved interesting, I think at the very least there is another reading of what Locke is saying that is equally interesting and provocative.
