In a multilingual Nigerian society as well as in similar countries like Australia, India or even in seemingly homogenous linguistic societies like Britain, language planning, development and policies are sin qua non. In this paper, the author has tried to look from the perspectives of the provisions of the National Policy on Education (1981) and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1979), and examine the curriculum issues arising from the language and policy aspects in achieving the national educational aims, goals, objectives and development. This paper takes a cursory look at the constitutional and policy documents as well as the realities on ground in the secondary schools. It is discovered that, this sub-sector of education is characterized with language implementation crisis. The disturbing issue is that, since the language of instru...

Language is considered to be a key to the heart of a people and communication is the essence of language. The substance of communication is, therefore, information. Knowledge of information and access to it is considered very necessary for the establishment, survival and growth of any business organisation. Therefore, information flow in this economic-driven world is very crucial to entrepreneurs all over the world. The theoretical framework of the paper is hinged on Crystal (1987), which conceptualises language as having, perhaps, ‘magical and mystical’ and ‘unique role in capturing the breath of human thought and endeavours’. Many studies have led to the significant insights into the nature of, and the relationship between language and thought. Such relationship shows that language is the vehicle for thought or business ideas. Although verbal, non-verbal and written media of communication have b...

Many positive results have followed such programmes in almost all fields of public health practices such as family planning, HIV/AIDS and others. This paper discusses some problems of Nigerian health practices and discovers that a greater number of the population lives in the rural areas of Nigeria and still upholds the old health beliefs. After a critical analysis, it is suggested that public health practices must engage audiences at all times, offer clear and captivating information and must receive feedback. The best approach is considered to be through multimedia methods. The paper concludes that with determination, professional skills, effective approaches and willingness to learn, family planning and health communication programmes should introduce cost sharing approach with ...

The colonial mentality in the first generation of graduates in Nigeria, which was deep-rooted in the Golden Fleece and certificate frenzy, influenced the limited spirit of entrepreneurship. Among the dead and surviving industries in Nigeria, the captains of these industries are semi-literate entrepreneurs. This paper adopts a case study of the Nigerian university system in re-positioning the economic development and entrepreneurial drive for job creation, wealth creation and global competitiveness of Nigerian youths/graduates. The main thrust of the paper is the emphasis on the marriage between theories and practical which the research and development centres in the universities should serve as technological incubators and entrepreneurship drive. The introduction of entrepreneurship education as a compulsory course in the Niger...

The purpose is to explore and expose the interdependence of the two subjects in enhancing English language competence. Apart from the educational advantages, it is also in the opinion of the writer that language is not only a necessity for the formulation of thoughts but also part of the thinking process itself, which is one of the great attributes of a literary man, that is, power of intuition. Considering the "Siaseme twin composition" of the two subjects, especially in a second language situation in Nigeria, the integration of the two, it is argued in this paper will, no doubt, enhance language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing as well as sub-skills of language such as pronunciation, comprehension, vocabulary development, perception, composition, etc. It is the conviction of the writer that Literature-in-English should form an integral part of the English language curriculum and examinations of May/June and November/

Many studies have led to the significant insights into the nature of, and the relationship between language and thought. Such relationship shows that language is the vehicle for thought or business ideas. Although verbal, non-verbal and written media of communication have been extensively engaged in the past, however, the inventions and introduction of telecommunications, computer network technology and internet have tremendously enhanced communication in real-time. The paper recommends that there is the growing need for entrepreneurs to acquire new information and communication technologies which have made the entire world to become a "global village" for the enhancement of their businesses because former communication means have become obsolete. The paper concludes that entrepreneurship spirit or drive, which is supported with effective linguistic and communicative knowledge and function in conjunction with the ICT, is the answer to the economic development and survival in the global entrepreneurship competitiveness.

Therefore, language and communication are sine qua non in this world of words and continued eruptions of conflicts or disputes. What defines human's humanity is language which is the vehicle of communication. People, therefore, engage in communication for many reasons and for the purpose of this paper, we shall examine the roles and functions of communication as one of the means of non-violent methods of conflict resolution. Language is regarded by experts as the key to the heart of a people. Language and communication, therefore, are very crucial in the management and resolution of conflicts or disputes between the two parties in conflicts. As important as language and communication are in conflicts and conflict resolutions, they are not properly focused in the works of many writers and researchers. This paper, therefore, identifies communication as a significant means of resolving conflicts. Other non-violent methods of management and resolution of conflicts where the use of language and communication are crucial and significantly inevitable include negotiation, dialogue, mediation, adjudication, arbitration as well as the use of the mass media. It is the opinion of this paper that the roles and functions of language and communication should be more focused, analysed and utilized in order to find out the root causes, management, effects and resolutions of conflicts in the society.
