A principal behavioral issue in paleoanthropology centers on the degree to which the behaviors of... more A principal behavioral issue in paleoanthropology centers on the degree to which the behaviors of Neanderthals and modern humans may have differed. Efforts to address this problem have employed the analysis of living floors and site structure in which researchers have traditionally emphasized a dichotomy between the site structures thought to distinguish Modern Human and Neanderthal occupations. This thinking links "complex" site structures characterized by several discrete activity areas to Modern Humans, in contrast to the "simple" structure of Neanderthals as seen in single hearths associated with overlapping, generalized activities. Correlations between prehistoric behaviors and site structures, however, may be masked, distorted, and even destroyed by a variety of natural and cultural agencies. Natural post-depositional processes may be associated with bioturbation, cryo-turbation, and the degradation of sediments through wind and water erosion. Both post-and synch-deposition "disturbance" of artifact distributions and features by human activities may involve cleaning, scuffage, and other site alterations. Perhaps the most vexing of problems associated with post-depositional distortion is from subsequent overlapping occupations in which a smearing or blurring of artifact distributions occurs; i.e., the palimpsest problem. Using the results of a multi-year research program of stratified living floors at the Late Levantine Mousterian rockshelter site of Tor Faraj, southern Jordan, an introduction to a partial solution of addressing the palimpsest problem through hearth pattern and ring and sector analyses is described here.

Qalkhan assemblages, found at four sites within the Jebel Qalkha study area (Figure 9.1), constit... more Qalkhan assemblages, found at four sites within the Jebel Qalkha study area (Figure 9.1), constitute a newly defined industry that appears to be the earliest within the Epipaleolithic succession of southern Jordan. Based upon stratigraphic evidence from two of these sites and technotypologic correlations with radiocarbon dated horizons from sites in the Azraq Basin of northeastern Jordan, the Qalkhan would appear to date to within an interval stretching from ca. 20,000–15,000 B.P.

Of the many technological advances in modern archaeology, 14C dating has had perhaps the greatest influence on shaping theoretical developments within Near Eastern prehistory. Whereas this influence has been most obvious in the domain of major cultural-historic questions (eg, the emergence of social complexity), a more significant theoretical consequence of the technique rests in the way Near Eastern prehistorians have come to explain variability in the prehistoric record.

Research in the mountains of southern Jordan resulted in the discovery of 109 archaeological site... more Research in the mountains of southern Jordan resulted in the discovery of 109 archaeological sites that are from the Lower Paleolithic to the Chalcolithic period [I50 to 6 thousand years ago (ka)]. Beginning with the Middle Paleolithic (70 ka) two site types (long-term and ephemeral camps) are recognized. Long-term sites have larger areas, thicker deposits, higher artifact densities, and more abundant archaeological features than ephemeral sites. Their natural settings (elevation and exposure) and associated seasonal evidence (phytolith and cementum increment data) indicate that long-term sites were occupied during the winter, wet season and ephemeral sites during the,warm, dry season. These differences in site use and seasonality likely reflect an adaptive strategy of transhumance that persisted to modern Bedouin times. At the end of the Pleistocene, the onset of warmer, drier conditions induced a shift of the long-term winter camps from relatively low (800 to 1000 meters above sea level) to high (1 000 to 1250 meters above sea level) elevations and largely reversed the earlier transhumant pattern.
