Studies on land vacancy have been carried out considering the open urban fabric and have not addressed the walled urban fabric, since in Brazil a large part of the closed city is produced by fortified horizontal residential enclaves. Considering that the country has high socio-territorial inequality, it is unacceptable for the city's infrastructure to remain idle, so addressing vacancy is urgent. In view of this, the objective is to analyze land vacancy in fortified horizontal residential enclaves in municipalities in the state of São Paulo: Indaiatuba, Itatiba, Marília and São Carlos, during the years 2000 to 2020. The method used for the research is from multiple case study and the methodology corresponds to spatial reading, transversal reading and longitudinal reading. Among the main conclusions of the research, the identification of fortified vacancy as a new category of urban vacancy to be incorporated into studies on the topic stands out, as well as providing new understandings about the process of producing urban vacancy in Brazilian cities.
