Paul Katuse is currently a school of Business faculty member. He earned his PhD in the area of Strategic Management in the year 2002. Paul is a strategy and leadership expert trainer. He has consulted with the public sector and the private sector in Kenya and his main interests are in global issues and their impacts on organizations in developing economies, organizational responses to change and reforms, globalization and the management of change in organizations. He has of late taken a keen interest in quality assurance issues in Institutions of Higher Education and especially the linkages between the organization's strategic issues and their core business which is teaching, research, consultancy and learning.

Nairobi Stock Exchange: A Regression of Factors Affecting Stock Prices

Purpose: This paper analyzed factors influencing the market index for the Nairobi Stock Exchange ... more Purpose: This paper analyzed factors influencing the market index for the Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE), taking a time horizon between January 2008 to December 2010. We posit that money supply, inflation rates, exchange rates, and interest rates are significant covariates affecting the market index.Methodology: The market index and the macroeconomic covariates data was obtained from the NSE and the Central Bank of Kenya. Multiple regression analysis was used to estimate the effects of the chosen factors that affect stock values, with the market index being the indicator variable for stock values.Results: Regression analysis results revealed that the selected macroeconomic covariates - interest rates, exchange rates and inflation - significantly affect the value of stocks in the NSE. Money supply was not significant even though it had a positive correlation with the stock prices. The skilled healthcare providers’ shortage in relation to the high healthcare service seekers has led to challenge of choice as well as poor health services. This has impacted the access constraint of health care services. The objective of the study was to assess the influence of access constraints on consumption of public healthcare services in Mandera County. A cross-sectional descriptive research design was used. Data was analyzed from 384 respondents. The study finding showed that access constraints affect the consumption of public healthcare services in Mandera County. The negative impact of distance was higher at the public health facilities. An increase in distance implies paying some cost to travel to the source of treatment as opposed to seeking self-treatment. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the influence of Quality Service Delivery dimens... more Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the influence of Quality Service Delivery dimensions on Competitive Advantage in universities operating in Kenya. This was an exploratory quantitative research. Method: This was a quantitative exploratory study. A total of 378 respondents from 17 universities participated in the research. A self-administered likert scale questionnaire was distributed to both students and faculty. Findings: The study found out that four dimensions of Quality Service Delivery namely Tangibles, Assurance, Responsiveness and Empathy had a strong positive significant relationship with Competitive Advantage. While Reliability had a positive relationship with Competitive Advantage, it was not significant factor. The findings are in line with several other studies and theories. Research limitations: The study is limited because it was only carried among universities operating in Kenya. Furthermore, the study had been done only in service industry. This limits applicability to universities operating outside Kenya and other non-service industry. Implications: The study supports developing and focusing on intangible competences in order to gain competitive advantage. The study implies that management need to work on crafting strategies that best combines resources in order to generate competitive advantage.

Design/methodology/approach – This is an exploratory qualitative research. A total of 378 respondents from 17 universities participated in the research. A questionnaire comprising of two open ended research questions was distributed to both students and faculty. Thereafter data was analyzed through thematic analysis. Findings – Regarding how universities enhanced quality, five themes emerged namely: research, staff focus, student focus and governance and planning. As to the sources of competitive advantage four themes emerged; strong brand name, research, methodology of teaching and learning environment. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the influence of Quality Service Delivery dimens... more Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the influence of Quality Service Delivery dimensions on Competitive Advantage in universities operating in Kenya. This was an exploratory quantitative research. Method: This was a quantitative exploratory study. A total of 378 respondents from 17 universities participated in the research. A self-administered likert scale questionnaire was distributed to both students and faculty. Findings: The study found out that four dimensions of Quality Service Delivery namely Tangibles, Assurance, Responsiveness and Empathy had a strong positive significant relationship with Competitive Advantage. While Reliability had a positive relationship with Competitive Advantage, it was not significant factor. The findings are in line with several other studies and theories. Research limitations: The study is limited because it was only carried among universities operating in Kenya. Furthermore, the study had been done only in service industry. This limits applicability to universities operating outside Kenya and other non-service industry. Implications: The study supports developing and focusing on intangible competences in order to gain competitive advantage. The study implies that management need to work on crafting strategies that best combines resources in order to generate competitive advantage.

Design/methodology/approach – This is an exploratory qualitative research. A total of 378 respondents from 17 universities participated in the research. A questionnaire comprising of two open ended research questions was distributed to both students and faculty. Thereafter data was analyzed through thematic analysis. Findings – Regarding how universities enhanced quality, five themes emerged namely: research, staff focus, student focus and governance and planning. As to the sources of competitive advantage four themes emerged; strong brand name, research, methodology of teaching and learning environment.
